2024 AFL Fixture

November 21st 2023, 11:11am, By: admin

It’s been a busy off-season in the AFL, with the trade period and national draft both bringing about renewed optimism for all 18 clubs in the competition. It’s now officially time to turn our attention to what promises to be an electric 2024 AFL season as we take a look at the newly released AFL fixture.

In a new look, the 2024 AFL season will begin with what’s labelled as an ‘Opening Round’ which takes place prior to Round 1. Eight teams will be in action on Opening Round, with Sydney vs Melbourne kicking the season off on Thursday, March 7.

Following Opening Round is of course Round 1 which will begin with the traditional Carlton vs Richmond blockbuster at the MCG. All 18 teams will take to the field in Round 1.

The eight teams playing in Opening Round will take turns having a bye two at a time over Rounds 2, 3, 5, & 6. All 18 teams are also scheduled to have an additional bye between Rounds 12-15. This effectively means there are nine bye rounds in the 2024 season, with a total of 25 weekends of football to be played during the home and away season.

The inaugural ‘Gather Round’ was seen as a success in 2023 and will make a return in 2024, with all 18 teams playing in South Australia in Round 4.

There’s certainly a lot to digest, and you can see the full round-by-round 2024 AFL fixture below.
