There are many weird and wonderful betting markets that you can bet on outside of the traditional sports and racing markets. Novelty markets are a lot of fun and can include things like reality TV, music, entertainment and awards nights.
But the latest exotic taking off at Australian betting sites?

Election Betting - 2025 Australian Federal Election
In Australia, both major political parties have swung into campaign mode. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is aiming to lead his Labor Party into government and be re-elected against Peter Dutton and the Coalition.
When is the Australian federal election? Nobody knows.
An election date has yet to be formally announced. Legally, the election must be held on or before May 17, but due to the nuisances of Australian law, there are now only three possible dates for the Federal Election - May 3, May 10 or May 17. An announcement is imminent!

Are election betting odds accurate?
Probably more than you think!
In the most recent US presidential election, it was argued that betting markets more accurately predicted the final result than polls.
The basic theory behind these American “prediction markets” is that a lot of people with money on the line can collectively predict an outcome better than any one expert. Even if they’re not well informed, the average of all these people’s different opinions, weighted by everyone’s shared reluctance to lose money, can create accurate forecasts for public events.
Why does this matter for Australian election betting? Because odds will change between now and election day based on which side is receiving more money wagered than the other.
Follow the changes in election betting odds, and you’re following the money. Follow the money, and you’re following a collective wisdom that can be shockingly accurate with its predictions.
Can you trust the election results if they’re being bet on?
Voting in the election is mandatory and a secure process. You can be sure that the official results can be trusted - regardless of what election betting odds indicated beforehand.
As for the bookies themselves? That’s a different story.
If we go back to 2019, one major Australian sports betting site paid out early on Bill Shorten to win the Australian Federal Election at odds of $1.16 two days before voting closed. The Australian public then surprisingly chose to re-elect Scott Morrison, leading to a $5.2 million bungle by the site.
What are your election betting tips?
We’re proven sports betting experts – not political pundits. We can’t pick the election winner with confidence, but we can share a few insights to hopefully guide you to a winning pick:
- While results often have been extremely close, no first-term government has lost a re-election attempt federally since 1931, so history is on Labor's side.
- Betting markets recently got the 2024 Queensland election right.
- Election betting markets become even more accurate the closer you get to polling day as more money flows into the pot and oddsmakers adjust their books.
- The 2025 federal budget was released this week. While some think it doesn’t do enough, others say it’s a decent whack of money for voters to be thinking about on the eve of an election. If you think better days are ahead, why would you change horses mid-race?
Above all else, remember that even the most accurate projections can be wrong. Always remember to bet responsibly!
