Match Preview
Brisbane and Geelong meet in a blockbuster Saturday night clash at the Gabba in Round 3, with both sides looking to establish themselves as early-season contenders. Originally scheduled for Opening Round before being postponed due to Cyclone Alfred, this contest promises to be a fierce battle, particularly with wet conditions expected throughout the day and night. The Lions enter this match unbeaten at 2-0, though their performances have been far from dominant. A narrow four-point win over the Swans in Round 1 was followed by a 19-point comeback victory against the Eagles last weekend. Meanwhile, the Cats sit at 1-1 after producing a stunning 78-point demolition of Fremantle in Round 1, only to fall to an upset defeat against St Kilda last weekend, where they lost by seven points despite being heavy favourites.
Brisbane has made two changes for this contest, with Charlie Cameron and Kai Lohmann coming into the side at the expense of Connor McKenna and Will McLachlan. Cameron’s inclusion adds a significant spark to the forward line, and his ability to thrive in slippery conditions could be crucial. For Geelong, Bailey Smith returns after missing last week with a calf injury, replacing Mark O’Connor. Smith was outstanding in his club debut in Round 1 and will be keen to make an impact. A key talking point for the Cats is Tom Stewart, who left the game against the Saints with a knee injury but has been cleared to play.
The last time these teams met was in last year’s Preliminary Final, where the Cats led by 19 points at half-time before being overrun by the Lions by 10 points. Both sides are considered premiership threats again this season, making this an early test of their credentials.
Despite their 2-0 record, Brisbane hasn’t looked entirely convincing, and this presents an opportunity for the Cats to catch them off guard. Geelong will be desperate to bounce back after last week’s disappointment, and they should bring the intensity from the outset. With that in mind, expect a close contest, and Geelong covering the 12.5-point spread looks like a strong play.

Max Holmes 25+ Disposals – Had the Windhager tag last week but should get free rein in this one. Happy to back in the gun mid.
