Match Preview
Hawthorn and GWS go head-to-head on Saturday night in Launceston, and this one could be a cracker. The Hawks have looked lively to start 2025, bringing plenty of run and pressure, while the Giants, fresh off a win, are starting to click with their best team on the park. Both sides will see this as a big chance to grab some early-season momentum.
The Hawks will be stoked to have Luke Breust back in the side, adding some class up forward. Jai Newcombe and Dylan Moore have been doing a mountain of work in the midfield, and James Sicily will again lead a backline that’s held up well despite some big tests. Their biggest challenge? Stopping GWS’s power forwards from getting off the chain.
GWS has welcomed back Jesse Hogan, and with Toby Greene running riot up forward, they suddenly look a lot more dangerous inside 50. Their midfield, led by Josh Kelly, Tom Green, and Finn Callaghan, should have the upper hand in the clearances, but they’ll need to handle Hawthorn’s speed on the outside. If they get that balance right, they’ll be tough to stop.
Playing in Tasmania is always an advantage for the Hawks, but GWS won’t be fazed. They’ve got the weapons to match it with Hawthorn in a shootout, and with Jake Stringer slotting into the forward mix, they’ve added real X-factor. If the Giants can apply scoreboard pressure early, the Hawks will be chasing all night.
This one could go down to the wire. The Hawks will back themselves in Tassie, but the Giants' experience and firepower might just give them the edge. I’m backing the Giants to get this one done as underdogs in a close match.

Jake Stringer 1+ Goal - Given he’s just come back from injury, I’m expecting Stringer to stay pretty close to goal for the majority of this game and not venture too far up the ground as he works his way back into form. Has kicked at least one goal in his last six games and 10 of his last 11.
Josh Kelly 20+ Disposals - Has started the season in strong form, averaging 29.5 touches across his first two games. Averages 26.0 per game in his last two full games against the Hawks.
Karl Amon 20+ Disposals - Three games and three easy green ticks for Karl Amon 20+ disposal selections. 27 against the Swans, 28 against the Bombers and 22 against the Blues last week.
SGM Odds: $2.20 at BoomBet
