We got the chocolates the other day with Eva Lys getting the job done against Varvara Gracheva. Can she keep her impressive run going as a lucky loser in this year's tournament?
Lys did manage to make things a little complicated against Gracheva. She did lead by a set and an early break in the second set, before finding herself down an early break in the decision set. She was the far better player in the back end of the match, and continued her impressive run after being called up to the main draw 10 minutes before her first match. Her confidence looks to be sky high, as she is set to take on Jaqueline Cristian for a spot in the 4th round.
Cristian is certainly a player who has flown under the radar in the first week, making it to the first weekend with little fanfare. However, her path to the third round on paper looks to have been one of the easier runs of any player in the draw. Lucia Bronzetti isn’t the type of player that can put you under consistent pressure, and her 8 winners to 27 unforced errors were quite the gift for Cristian. Now, you can only beat the players that are across the net, however I don’t think the overall form from Cristian is anywhere near as strong as that of Lys overall over the short to medium term.
I am more than comfortable with another selection on Lys to continue her dream run here as a lucky loser in what is a MASSIVE opportunity for both players.
