Match Preview

Gold Coast and Adelaide go head-to-head in a huge early-season clash between two undefeated sides. The Suns are 2-0 and sitting fourth on the ladder, while the Crows have started 3-0 and are up in second. Both teams have been dominant so far, and with the two highest-scoring attacks in the comp, this one could be a shootout. The Suns have had a dream start, smashing the Eagles by 87 points and then taking down the Demons by 58, both on the road. Now, they return home to People First Stadium, where they were outstanding last season with a 9-3 record.

The Crows have also had a soft draw to start, but they’ve made the most of it, smashing St Kilda, Essendon, and North Melbourne to get to 3-0. They’ve looked electric going forward, averaging 137 points per game, while the Suns aren’t far behind at 128. The real test now is whether either team’s defence can stand up against a much stronger opponent than they’ve faced so far. Midfield battle will be key, as both sides have been strong in clearances and inside 50s early in the year.

There are a few changes for this one. The Suns bring in Ben Ainsworth for Nick Holman, while Adelaide have swapped out Matt Crouch and Josh Rachele for Luke Nankervis and Lachlan Murphy. Crouch is being rested, while Rachele is out for 4-6 weeks with broken ribs. One big factor in this game is the home-ground advantage—the home team has won each of the last six meetings between these teams. The Suns secured the win by six points when they played at People First Stadium last season.

This is a tough game to call because both teams have looked fantastic so far, but Gold Coast’s home record over the past 12 months is hard to ignore. Adelaide look sharp, but they haven’t been a strong team away from home in recent years. With that said, I’ll be cautiously backing the Suns to grab the win in what should be a cracking contest.

Gold Coast -4.5

Riley Thilthorpe 2+ Goals – Quickly becoming a genuine force in the competition. 3, 3, and 3 goals so far this year and is a handful for any defender.

Ethan Read Score Anytime – Was a bit quieter last week but still managed to hit the scoreboard. Remains strong value considering he spends the majority of his time deep forward.

Matt Rowell 25+ Disposals – Has had a superb start to the season and looks to be getting more involved with the uncontested stuff. 30 and 36 disposals so far and should get plenty of it again.

SGM Odds: $3.10 at BoomBet
