2024 AFL Round 13 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney vs Geelong
Sunday 3:20pm AEST, June 9th, SCG
It's been hard not to be impressed by Sydney and the way they have gone about things to start 2024. They are six points clear at the top of the table, their percentage is nearing record levels, and when you think about it, how they lost to Richmond earlier in the year...baffling. Big in for them this week with Tom McCartin returning from concussion to further strengthen an already deep back line. They have turned the SCG into a fortress again in 2024 and they have an amazing record at the ground against Geelong, highlighted of course by Buddy kicking his 1000th goal and Nick Davis in 2005 in THAT Semi Final. What is also remarkable with Sydney and their 2024 form is their forward half work. They are #1 in the comp for goal accuracy and goal efficiency. When they see a chance, more often than not, they take it to the maximum effect.
Geelong looked gone against Richmond last weekend but a couple of young guns in Dempsey and Holmes lifted in the midfield in the second half and pretty much alone, dragged the Cats home in winning. There were whispers that Patrick Dangerfield could play this weekend but the club are keeping him on ice given what is ahead for the rest of the year. It is no secret that the last 4-6 weeks from Geelong have been so so and without Dangerfield, that midfield isn't deep re depth. But, Chris Scott is the best coach in the AFL and I am sure he will come up some sort of plan to try and nullify, or minimise, the damage that the Swans midfield are likely to cause, especially coming off a bye and at home. Blicavs returns from suspension and he is a Mr Fix It, whether it be in the back line or in the ruck, the latter being the likely option given Brodie Grundy is flying.
Match Prediction: It'll be interesting to see how the ground is after all the rain Sydney has copped the last few days. Traditionally, the SCG doesn't hold rain very well but recently in the Derby against GWS, despite rain leading in, the ground held up really well, largely due to no rain during the game. If is a wet deck and it becomes a slog, I think that suits Geelong more so than Sydney in terms that it takes away the brilliance of the Swans. But if the rain stays away for 24 hours or so and the ground can dry out, then Sydney and all their weapons has the potential to cause real damage and blow Geelong away.

Swans To Win: I can't see Geelong properly threatening Sydney unless Chris Scott pulls out a rabbit and a coaching masterclass.
Chad Warner 25+ Disposals: His last 6 or so weeks has been just about competition best, certainly Sydney best, and his game against the Bulldogs was just about career best. Expecting a big game.
Errol Gulden 25+ Disposals: As good as Heeney and Warner have been, this guy has been just as good. He has 25+ his past eight games and suspect he'll rack up a high number.
Chad Warner Anytime Goal Scorer: He's a gun midfielder who can go forward and kick goals, as well as kick goals from a centre bounce clearance. Confident he'll snag at least one.
