Doomben Racing Tips: Saturday January 21st

January 20th 2023, 9:05pm, By: Billy Bestford

After the excitement of the Magic Millions just a few days ago on the Gold Coast, the attention of Queensland racing turns to Doomben.  We have a strong card across the afternoon with nine races to be run. The track is currently rated a soft 5 but I think we can improve off that mark come race day. Billy Bestford is back once again to bring you his best bets and race previews for all the key races.

If you're looking for a new sportsbetting site today, then we recommend you back a winner with Neds!

Doomben Racing Tips: Saturday January 21st

Race 1

Think we have a pretty smart horse on our hands with (7) Party For Two and am looking forward to seeing her jump straight to Saturday company. She toyed with rivals last time out, winning by 7.5L. This doesn’t look overly strong and I think this is an ideal stepping stone onto bigger races.

(1) Quasimoto has the form on the board to say he should be very competitive here. His 2nd to Soverign Fund two back stacks up well for a handicap race like this. With that said I have a query on him dropping back slightly in trip after two runs at 1100m.

(8) Admonish won a trial in nice fashion leading into this and have to respect the Waller stable with their 2yo crop up in QLD. Jim Byrne takes the ride and you’d have to think $7 looks a decent price.

(9) Five Star Vixen ran a close 2nd to Skirt The law at the only trial we have seen from her. That horse has obviously won the MM 2yo classic since and while it was only a trial, she traveled well enough in her own right.

(7) Party For Two

$2.05  (2 units)

Race 4

I like (3) Ashgrove to bounce back to winning ways here rising in trip after a very narrow 2nd over 1800m last start. The win here prior to that run was dominant and getting back to Doomben is a big positive for this horse. Maloney should be able to land in a nice trailing position and I think he will be too strong late.

(4) Green Flash looks the main danger and has struck a purple patch of form since getting out in trip here in QLD. Looks again suited up to 2000m now and he has always promised to be a handy enough middle distance horse. Think Waller may have turned a corner with this horse now.

(2) American Saint has won two on the trot now and no reason to really say why he can’t measure up again. Gets in light after a good claim for an in-form jockey and has drawn for a nice run in transit.

(11) Military Gambler had no luck last time out over 1800m. He still only finished 3L off the winner there and the form prior to that had been very good. Can bounce back.

(3) Ashgrove

$3.00  (1.5 units)

Race 7

(11) Vaccine was the eye catcher two weeks ago in a race that Latakia won. That horse was then well-fancied in the Magic Millions on Thursday. On a day where few horses made ground, he ran on strongly into 3rd. He loves racing here at Doomben and has drawn wide which should see him plenty of room to wind up and finish over the top of them.

(6) Ayahuasca is a better horse than what sheshowed 2nd up following a dominant fresh win. He’s only had two starts for Gollan and you would expect he has her wound up and ready to bounce back here. If they ride her more positive like they did first up I think she could take some catching.

(8) Dark Horse rarely puts in a poor one. He’s been holding his form all throughout the prep and is deserving of another win. He looks to get a dream run from the inside draw for Byrne.

(4) Stormy Rock can improve 3rd up at huge odds.

(11) Vaccine

$3.40  (2 units)

Race 9

Hoping (1) The Big Goodbye can send us out a winner to round out the card today. He defied a big market drift 2nd up to prevail in a tight finish and generally is an even better horse 3rd up. He’s as honest as they come and rarely runs a poor race. He espeically enjoys racing here at Doomben and the early market hasn’t missed him.

(8) Orbisyn was set to be the next big thing up north after dominating early on in his career. He probably hasn’t reached the heights many thought he would get to but he has been racing very well this prep. Back to 1100m is his bread and butter and looks ready to win one now.

(12) Glorious Ruby beat a few handy types two back before never getting in the race last start when trapped wide. She draws much better today and expect she will be able to peel off the leaders backs when they turn for home and give a strong kick.

(18) Baristasista was a dominant winner at Towoomba last time out and deserves a crack in town now. Think she is one of the more interesting runners on the card with a bit of upside still to come.

(1) The Big Goodbye

$3.60  (1 unit)
