It’s the business end of the NFL season and Monday in Week 17 boasts a fantastic slate of games headlined by a big AFC clash between the Chiefs and Bengals. We have you covered with a preview for the key games of the day below.
NFL Week 17 Monday Betting Tips
Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens
5am (AEDT)
The Ravens made a strong case to be Super Bowl favourites last week as they trounced the San Francisco 49ers in dominant fashion, 33-19. They have the best record in the league at 12-3 and are an equal best 10-5 against the spread. They are one of the few teams left in the league that hasn’t had any injury issues at quarterback this season, and it’s paying divedends now with Lamar Jackson now a 1.50 favourite for MVP.
The Dolphins have been quietly accumulating wins over the course of the season and now sit in a very comfortable position having clinched a playoff berth with two games to go. They can wrap up the AFC East title with a win on Monday, and they’ll like their chances coming off back to back wins against the Jets and Cowboys.
Tough game to split either way here but I do like the overs. The Dolphins are the No.1 ranked offence in the league, putting up 30.9 points per game while the Ravens are no slouches, averaging 27.8.
Betting Stats
- The Dolphins and Ravens are both 10-5 against the spread this season, tied for the best record in the NFL along with the Buccs and Lions.
- In the 32 games involving the Ravens or Dolphins this season, the over under is a perfect 16-16.
Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs
8.25am (AEDT)
The Chiefs have lost three of their last four games and are looking extremely vulnerable as we come into the final weeks of the season. Their only win in that period came against the Patriots, and they have managed to score just 19.25 points per game across those games.
The Bengals java turned a corner since starting QB Joe Burrow went down and Jake Browning came into the line-up in his place. They won three straight games to surge back into playoff contention before going down the Steelers 34-11 on the weekend. They are not out of the playoff race yet, but will definitely need to win their remaining games to be a chance of an AFC wildcard.
I think the unders is the play here. I expected this line to be around the 40.5 mark so was very surprised to see it at 44.5 despite the serious form slump of the Chiefs offence of late. Five of their last eight games have gone under the total, back it again here.
Betting Stats
- All five Chiefs games against teams with winning records this season have gone under the total.
- The Bengals have covered the spread in their past five meetings with the Chiefs.
Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings
12.20pm (AEDT)
The battle for the NFC wildcards is still fiercely contested and this NFC North clash between the Vikings and Packers on Sunday Night Football has massive implications. Both teams currently sit at 7-8 on the season and while the Lions have already clinched the division, three playoff spots are up for grabs amongst eight teams.
The Vikings have lost their last two games and four of their last five. Their only win in that period was the ugly 3-0 victory over the Raiders back in Week 14. Their offence in that five week period has mustered just 16.2 points per game and they have covered the spread just one time.
The Packers have had contrasting form of late. Over their last six games, they are 4-2 straight up and 3-3 against the spread, making a last ditch run for the playoffs in the NFC. Their offence has been impressive over that period, putting up 25.6 points per game, which is why I expect them to get the job done here against an out of form Vikings outfit.
Betting Stats
- When at home and favoured, the Vikings have failed to cover the spread in four straight games.
- Prime-time unders are 33-17 this season and 156-102-4 (.605) over the past five seasons.
