A-League 2024-25: Round 8 Preview & Betting Tips

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar

CommBank Stadium, Saturday 14th December, 7:35pm AEDT

The Wanderers secured their best win of the season last time out when taking down Melbourne City 2-0 on the road. It was the perfect response to their 4-2 loss against Sydney in the derby the week prior. The Wanderers have now moved into ninth spot on the ladder and can finish the round inside the top six with a win on Saturday night.

The Roar also played Melbourne City in their most recent game but didn’t have anywhere close to the same success. They were thumped 4-1 at home to make it three losses from as many games on their home deck. Defence has been a major issue so far this season for Brisbane who have conceded 2+ goals in every fixture. As a result, they occupy last spot on the ladder with just one point to their name.

Coming off such a great win against a quality opponent, it’s no surprise to see the Wanderers as the favourites in this fixture against the last-placed Roar. Home ground advantage is also at play here for the Wanderers, which only further boosts their winning chances. With all of that in mind, I’m more than happy to be with the home side in this one.

Perth Glory vs Newcastle Jets

HBF Park, Saturday 14th December, 9:45pm AEDT

Perth Glory were in action against Melbourne Victory last weekend and failed to find the back of the net as they suffered a 2-0 defeat. That was the fourth time from seven outings in which they’ve failed to score so far this season, which certainly isn’t a recipe success considering they’ve conceded 2+ goals in all but one of their games. Needless to say, it seems as though the Glory are in for a very long season.

The Jets have also found the going tough so far this campaign with five defeats from six outings. Their lone positive result was a win in Week 2 against the Bulls on the road (2-1). Finding goals has also been tough for the Jets who have scored in only three of their six fixtures, and they enter Round 8 on a four-game skid.

This certainly isn’t the sexiest of fixtures to conclude Super Saturday, but it’s one where both sides are in desperate need of a win. For me, the Jets have been the slightly better outfit of the pair simply due to how poor the Glory have been defending. This is by no means a high-bet game for me, but I do think there’s slight value in taking the Jets to win.

Melbourne City vs Auckland FC

AAMI Park, Sunday 15th December, 5:00pm AEDT

Melbourne City were able to dust themselves off from their disappointing showing against the Wanderers in Round 6 to take down the Roar in emphatic fashion last weekend (4-1). Interestingly, City have now won four out of four on their travels but have lost both home games at AAMI Park. City enter Sunday’s clash inside the top four and will stay there regardless of the result from this game.

Auckland’s mesmerising inaugural A-League season continued last outing when they defeated Wellington for the second time in less than a month. Auckland have been defending at an otherworldly level this season, conceding just one goal from six outings, and enter the round as the only team without a blemish on their record (6-0-0).

It’s a cracking matchup we have on our hands here to close out Round 8 and one that I think goals will be hard to come by in, particularly considering how stingy Auckland’s defence has been. The two ways to play this game from a betting standpoint is to take under 2.5 goals or both teams not to score. I’ve opted to go with the latter for a single unit.

Both Teams to Score – No

$2.30 (1 Unit)
