BBL12 Scorchers vs Stars Preview & Betting Tips
Optus Stadium, Thursday 29th December, 9:10pm (AEDT)
Perth Scorchers
Predicted XI: Adam Lyth, Faf du Plessis, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Ashton Turner, Aaron Hardie, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, Peter Hatzoglou
The Scorchers grinded out a crucial win over the ladder leading Strikers, chasing down 133 in the final over with just three wickets in hand. Skipper Ashton Turner anchored the innings with a match winning 48 not out off 38 balls, to guide his side home in a low scoring affair. The Scorchers are 3-1 and will move to the top of the table with a win over the struggling Stars.
The Scorchers bowling attack has been arguably the best in the competition this season, led by Jhye Richardson (8 Wickets at an average of 11.37, with an economy of 5.38), Andrew Tye (8 wickets at 17.5) and Jason Behrendorff (7 wickets at 17.57, economy of 7.58). All three rank inside the top ten wicket takers in BBL12, and have been well supported by their two spinners in Ashton Agar and Peter Hatzoglou.
The top order for the Scorchers did the damage in the 61 run demolition of the Stars on the 23rd of December. Faf du Plessis (68 off 33), Nick Hobson (46 off 26) and Josh Inglis (74 off 33) smashed the Stars bowling attack to all parts of the Junction Oval. Although the conditions will be more difficult at Optus Stadium, the Scorchers will be full of confidence coming into Thursday night’s clash.
Melbourne Stars
Predicted XI: Joe Clarke, Tom Rogers, Beau Webster, Nick Larkin, Hilton Cartwright, James Seymour, Campbell Kellaway, Luke Wood, Liam Hatcher, Trent Boult, Adam Zampa
Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Coulter-Nile were managed for the Stars clash against the Sixers on Boxing Day, and are expected to be fit for Tuesday night’s fixture. It’s likely the duo will replace James Seymour and Liam Hatcher who had taken their places in the side against the Sixers.
The Stars top heavy side relies on their top end talent, and it’s been clear this season that it’s Joe Clarke or bust when it comes to their batting. In the Stars three losses this season Clarke has been dismissed for 11, 18 and 27, in their one win Clarke scored 101 not out. Beau Webster hit a career best 78 against the Sixers, however the support for Clarke has been few and far between.
Luke Wood (9 wickets at 15.22, with an economy of 8.58), and Adam Zampa (6 wickets at 18.83, with an economy of 7.06) have been bright spots with the ball for the Stars this season. The Stars have only conceded more than 152 runs once this season, however they simply haven’t had enough runs to bowl at in BBL12.
Match Prediction
The Scorchers have had the wood over the Stars across the last five years, winning eight of the last ten clashes between the two sides. Not only have they won eight of the last ten, Perth have won their last four in a row against the Stars, with the Stars’ last win over the Scorchers coming back in 2020.
Stoinis and Coulter-Nile coming back into the eleven will add some much needed depth, however it’s clear that even with them in the side the Stars don’t have the depth to match the Scorchers. The Scorchers bowling attack has been in red hot form this summer, and will be too good for an underperforming Stars batting unit.
