2022-23 A-League Futures Betting Tips
Grand Final Winner
The three Victorian clubs are at the top of the outright market this season, and that makes sense considering they finished 1-3 in the 2021-22 home and away season.
Defending champions Western United ($7.50) are on the third line of betting. It’s always hard to repeat, but they’ve gotten slightly stronger on paper with the signings of James Troisi and Tongo Doumbia. Allesandro Diamanti is another year older (now 39) but will feel like a fresh signing after missing the bulk of last season. He’ll be looking to go out on a high note after announcing this will be the last year of his stellar 23-year professional career.
After going down to Western United in the semi’s, Melbourne United ($5) will be looking to go one or two steps further this season. They’ve made a whole host of changes to their squad, although none bigger than the acquisition of marquee player, Nani. He’s been a top player in big leagues around the world and will have plenty of eyes on him this campaign. Aside from Nani, Tomi Juric is the other signing that could have a big impact this season.
Last seasons runners-up, Melbourne City ($4), are the favourites to go one better and win the Grand Final. They’ll have a sour taste in their mouth after failing to back up their home and away season with a flag, but they certainly have the quality to compete at the business end again. They bring back a similar squad to last campaign and will be hoping that the signing of attacking midfielder Richard van der Venne from the Eredivisie will help their fortunes.
Despite going down in last season’s Grand Final, Melbourne City have been the benchmark in the A-League in recent years and I expect that to be the case again this campaign. They have the strongest team on paper and have finished top of the ladder in each of the last two editions. They’re best placed to make another run at the title this season.
Top NSW Team
After five consecutive years of finishing the home and away season in the top two, Sydney FC fell to eighth in 2021-22 in what was their equal worst finish in the league in the past 20 years. However, the last they failed to make finals was back in 2016 when the finish seventh, and they went onto win the Grand Final the following season and lost just one match in their entire campaign. This tells us that they’re a club that doesn’t settle for mediocrity and you can bet they’ll be out to make amends this season. Sydney FC made some wholesale changes to their list in the off-season in attempt to surge back into contention this season, and I see them ranking first above NSW teams as a result.
Top Others
Out of the four clubs that aren’t located in Victoria and NSW, Adelaide United look to be best placed to have the most successful season. Wellington Phoenix are the favourites for the Wooden Spoon after failing to make a splash in the transfer market, while Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar finished in the bottom two last campaign and have made little changes to get fans excited about a resurgence. This leaves us with Adelaide United who have made the semi-finals in each of the last two seasons and have only strengthened their squad in the off-season. They bring back Craig Goodwin for another year, but have also signed Ben Halloran and Ben Warland, both of whom should have an immediate impact. The Reds should be finishing higher than the other three clubs in this market.
