A-League Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips
Adelaide United vs Melbourne Victory
Friday 7:45pm AEDT, Coopers Stadium
The Reds made it two on the spin with an explosive 4-2 victory over the defending champs on the road last weekend. They’re having no issue whatsoever with finding the back of the net this campaign, having already scored nine times in five fixtures. In contrast, Victory went three games without scoring a goal, but they made up for it last start when they put four past the Jets.
17 goals have been scored in five Adelaide fixtures this campaign, which means we should be in for another entertaining game to kick off Round 6. With Victory also finding some form in front of goal, this one hast the makings of a high-scoring affair. I’m keen to stake a couple of units on the overs on this occasion.

Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne City
Saturday 5pm AEDT, McDonald Jones Stadium
The Jets will be happy to be back on their home deck after a couple of tough losses on the road over the past fortnight. They’re now 2-0 at home (+3 GD) and 0-2 on the road (-6 GD) coming into Saturday’s clash. Their opponents in Melbourne City were at their dominant best at home last weekend when smashing Glory 4-0. City remain the only undefeated team in the competition.
As mentioned above, the Jets have performed substantially better on their home deck this season, albeit with a small sample size. However, they now welcome the best team in the league to McDonald Jones Stadium, and that usually means trouble. City have won three of their last four against the Jets and I expect them to make it four from five on Saturday night.

Sydney vs Western Sydney Wanderers
Saturday 7:45pm AEDT, Allianz Stadium
Sydney’s rollercoaster campaign continued last weekend when they were defeated 3-1 by the Roar. Still, it’s been a more promising start to their season compared to 2021-22, and they’ll be keen to be back at home for this one. Travelling to Allianz Stadium will be the Wanderers who were embarrassed at home by the Mariners last weekend. Perhaps their form prior was a little deceiving, and they aren’t all we’ve made them out to be.
Sydney have been the hardest team to get a read on to date, but a close second are the Wanderers. This makes for an extremely hard Derby to predict and one that I’ll be hesitant to make a play on. Still, if you insist on a punt, then I’m slightly leaning towards the home side who have won four of the last five times in this matchup.

Wellington Phoenix vs Western United
Sunday 1pm AEDT, Sky Stadium
After a positive start to the season with not much to show for it, the Phoenix finally secured their first win last weekend. They were dominant on their home deck against Macarthur and are now undefeated in front of their fans from three games. In contrast, Western United have had a horrible start to their campaign and to say they look a shell of themselves from a season ago is somewhat generous. They’ve collected only one point to date and have conceded a whopping eight goals from their last two fixtures.
Western United have already burned us a couple of times this season and I won’t be making the same mistake again this weekend. They’re playing with no confidence whatsoever and it’ll be hard to turn that around in Wellington where the fans will be pumped. So, with that said, I’ll be backing in Wellington to record another win this weekend.

Central Coast Mariners vs Macarthur
Sunday 3pm AEDT, Central Coast Stadium
The Mariners returned to form with a big win against Western United in Round 4 and backed it up with their best performance of the season to date against the Wanderers. They controlled the game from the first whistle to the last to record a 3-0 win. The Mariners will take on Macarthur this weekend who are looking to bounce back after back-to-back defeats. Macarthur were no match for the Phoenix last weekend and have now conceded seven goals from their last two matches.
The Mariners are clearly the form team in this matchup and their chances of winning are only increased with this being on their home ground. However, they’re certainly short enough in the head-to-head market, so I’ll be having a small play on them to win this by multiple goals.
