The third Grand Slam of 2016 has arrived. The Championships or Wimbledon as it is more commonly known is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament on the planet. It all begins on Monday the 27th June at approximately 8:00 PM AEST.
The prize money has increased a whopping 6.4% for the Men’s and Women’s champions. Each will take home a £2 million check. The total prize pool is also up 5.1% from 2015.
There is a common trend we are seeing in this year’s women’s majors. Surprisingly it has been Serena Williams finishing runner-up. In the Australian Open it was German player Angelique Kerber that got the better of Williams. More recently it was the young Spanish star Garbine Muguruza at the French Open.
The obvious reason for these losses is the pressure that Serena Williams puts on herself. In the attempt to equal Steffi Graf at 22 Grand Slam victories. Another distraction that has proved to be negative is a new documentary titled “Serena” that is centred around her chase of the 2015 calendar year Grand Slam. Ever since that semi-final loss at the U.S. Open Serena Williams has seemed out-of-sorts.
The Women’s draw will be missing Victoria Azarenka due to a knee injury and obviously Maria Sharapova will not be attending. The second favourite to Serena is French Open winner Garbine Muguruza ($6.00). However, she seems a little bit shaky to me after a first round loss at the Mallorca Open (grass) lead up tournament.
My eye is on world number three and 2012 runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska. The Polish player is known for constructing points and making intelligent use of the court. With the few shadows-of-doubt surrounding the top hopes I am recommending a small play on Agnieszka Radwanska at $21.
