Bye rounds in the NFL kick off in Week 5 of the season, which means we have just the 12 games to look forward to this Monday. As always, we have you covered with the key matchups of the day as well as betting tips for every game below.
NFL Week 5 Monday Betting Tips
New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots
Monday 4.00am (AEDT)
Probably the best of the early slate pits the Patriots against the Saints from Gillette Stadium at 4am. The Patriots have started the season with a 1-3 record but have probably been a touch better than that record suggests given they have faced three of the best teams in the league in the Eagles, Dolphins and Cowboys so far. They will finally get a slight respite this week with a home game against the 2-2 Saints.
The Patriots defence has been solid but their offence has been poor through four weeks, culminating in starting quarterback Mac Jones being benched in the loss to the Cowboys in Week 4. They were smashed 38-3 by Dallas as Jones threw two interceptions and the Patriots had just 253 total yards on offence.
The Saints have lost their last two games to fall to 2-2 and are yet to cover the spread this season, going 0-3-1 so far. The Pats defence should be too good for the Saints, who have put up just 13 points per game over their last two. Back New England to cover the 1.5 point spread at home here.
Betting Stats
- The under is 4-0 in the four Saints games this season
- In 20 games as a favourite, Patriots starting QB Mac Jones is 12-7-1 against the spread
- The Patriots are 26-14 against the spread in October over the last 10 seasons
Kansas City Chiefs at Minnesota Vikings
Monday 7.25am (AEDT)
After a shock loss to the Lions in Week 1, the Chiefs have bounced back to win three straight games and they are 2-2 against the spread this season. Their offence has found form over the past two weeks, putting up 32 points per game in that span as both games comfortably hit the over. Their defence has also been solid, currently ranked 6th in the league, allowing just 15.0 points per game through four.
The Vikings have been a middling team on both offence and defence this season, ranking 17th in the former and 20th in the latter through four games. They won their first game of the season in Week 4, downing the Panthers by eight points on the road on Sunday. It was also the first time the Vikings have covered the spread this season.
The Chiefs start as 3.5 point favourites on the road but I’m leaning towards the overs here. In the dome in Minnesota, I think the Chiefs put up 35+ against this Vikings defence, which allowed 34 to the Eagles back in Week 2.
Betting Stats
- In their last nine games as an underdog, the Vikings are 1-7-1 against the spread
- In their last seven road games, the Chiefs are just 2-5 against the spread
Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers
Monday 11.20am (AEDT)
The game of the week and arguably the game of the season so far sees the 49ers hosting the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. San Francisco have looked like the best team in the league this season, starting 4-0 straight up and 3-0-1 against the spread. They have the No.3 ranked offence in the league, averaging 31.3 points per game and the No.3 ranked defence in the league, allowing just 14.5 points per game.
The Cowboys bounced back from a Week 3 loss to the Cardinals with a dominant victory at home against the Patriots in Week 4. They smashed the Pats on both sides of the ball, forcing three turnovers on their way to a 38-3 win. Like their opponents on Sunday night, they are ranked in the top five for both offence and defence.
The 49ers start as 3.5 point favourites at home and I love them at that line. They have an average winning margin of 26.8 across their four wins this season and have won their last two against the Cowboys by an average of 6.5 points. Back them to get the job done at home on Sunday night.
Betting Stats
- In his nine games as a starting quarterback, Brock Purdy is 9-0 straight up and 7-1-1 against the spread
- Eight of the last 10 meetings between the Cowboys and 49ers have gone over the total
