It should be another beautiful night in Melbourne this Friday for the meeting at Moonee Valley highlighted by the running of the 2017 William Reid Stakes. We've taken a look at all eight races on the card with tips for every race. After a big night last Friday, we're hoping for a few more winners this week!
Moonee Valley Betting Tips – Friday March 24th
Race 1
We kick off the card with a decent looking Benchmark 70 race over the 2040m. Poppiholla looks a strong chance out of the Weir camp. Has put consistent results on the board and was pretty unlucky to be held up last time in similar race. Princess Aria whipped them at Sandown but I fear will be too far back on the short straight of Moonee Valley. Going with TYPHOON MONACO as the top pick. Has come up short in price but hasn’t done a lot wrong with five placings from six career starts. That form stacks up nicely and should get conditions to suit.
TIP: Typhoon Monaco
Race 2
Muraaqeb has come up favourite on the back of a solid third placing after running wide in the Black Opal. Doesn’t map the best here, but should be in the finish. Showtime brings some strong form lines from Sydney behind She Will Reign, but after racing on Heavy tracks in Sydney, how much will be in the legs coming to a Good track in Melbourne? Going with a bit of value here with PAGEANTRY at good odds. Following a maiden victory, has shown some good signs, finishing third last start in Adelaide behind some decent types. Maps well here and looks good value each-way.
TIP: Pageantry
Race 3
Falcool was impressive winning the Moomba Plate. Will be fitter second up here and has to be considered a top chance once again. Held off a class horse in Ken’s Dream who was well supported that day, and comes up favourite here but the price is quite short in a tough race. Matty was disappointing last start, so if you can forgive that run, you’re now getting a nice price. However I really like the look of the resuming DEMOLITION. Was impressive last Spring winning both starts and has trialled strongly leading into this. Could be a good type.
TIP: Demolition
Race 4
The 55-second Challenge will be a frantic dash over the 955m. Petits Filous resumes here as the even money favourite. With five wins from eight starts, some in tougher company than this and including two prior wins when resuming, it just seems a matter of whether Petits Filous is ready to go. She is the class of this line up, but it seems a bit of a risk to take that short price after such a long layoff. Love the price about PUNT CLUB who got the money for us last start with a tough win. A real step up here, but offers a great each-way bet. Also like the each-way price about top pick SIRBIBLE. Loves this track and loves to smash the clock. Will get out in front and put on a speed that will make plenty of these uncomfortable.
TIP: Sirbible / Punt Club e/w
Race 5
I’ve been following PENINSULA LINKS in Adelaide and believe that form can stack up well in Melbourne. Has won three of last four and placed in seven of eight starts, so you know what you’re going to get. Will get up on the speed and hard to get past. Ellicazoom is going to be the main threat as another interstate raider in cracking form. Was a huge run at Flemington last start to just get nosed on the line, and should be super fit here. Won’t be wanting to add another runner-up result here. Oregon’s Day also has to be respected.
TIP: Peninsula Links (BEST BET)
Race 6
The Sunline Stakes will see I AM A STAR as a deserved even money favourite. Was a good win in the Kenway and the 1600m should pose no problems but will need to tuck in from the wide barrier. Circular has been in strong form with a G3 win at Flemington. Proven to enjoy this trip but will be tough from the back on the tight Moonee Valley track. French Emotion looks a nice each-way price. She has a bit of class about her, but struggled a bit in Sydney. A return to Melbourne and a good track might be the spark she needs.
TIP: I Am A Star
Race 7 – William Reid Stakes
The feature race of the night is the William Reid Stakes over the 1200m with a quality field lining up. Flamberge won this race last year and is a strong chance to take it out again. Was disappointing in the Oakleigh Plate but the race prior was right in the finish with Terravista in the Kensington. Should get a nice trail on speed behind Sheidel who will lead them up. Has a super winning record but not at this track. Will give a great sight. There are a number of other chances but I’ll be with SILENT SEDITION. I just love the consistency of this horse with 14 places from 15 career starts, and last start was a very tough second behind Heavens Above in the Coolmore at Rosehill. Likes the Moonee Valley track and can get a sit on speed and run then down late.
TIP: Silent Sedition
Race 8
HANDSOME THIEF should be able to bring us home a winner but the $1.50 odds are nothing to get too excited about. Three strong performances including a win last start at Moonee Valley under a big weight. Looks a class above here. If there’s going to be a surprise, I’m sure Tigidig Tigidig is the one to probably do it. Impossible to catch, old Tigi has brought a new level of consistency, finding the line first the last three starts, including a very tough win at this grade. Looks a big each-way price.
TIP: Handsome Thief
