Match Preview
North Melbourne and Sydney face off under the lights at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night in what promises to be a highly competitive contest. Both teams enter Round 4 with a 1-2 record and plenty to prove. The Kangaroos, currently 10th on the ladder, have shown real signs of progress in 2024 after years of rebuilding, while the Swans sit just behind them in 11th and are looking to gather some momentum after an inconsistent start. With both sides believing they can walk away with the four points, this clash shapes as one of the weekend’s most intriguing matchups.
The Kangaroos enjoyed a huge statement win over Melbourne in Round 2, dismantling the Demons by 59 points in one of the club’s best performances in recent memory. Although they couldn’t replicate that form last week in Adelaide against the undefeated Crows, going down by 36 points, there were still encouraging signs, particularly in their ball movement and pressure around the contest. With 15 wins combined across the past five seasons, North finally appear to be building something sustainable. The Kangaroos have made three changes to their side, including the debut of Matt Whitlock, while Griffin Logue and Riley Hardeman also come in as they look to break an eight-game losing streak against the Swans.
Sydney, meanwhile, return from a Round 3 bye with fresh legs and a bit of confidence after edging out Fremantle in Round 2. It wasn’t a polished performance, but the Swans showed grit to come from behind and win by three points. They’ve made just the one change for this clash, with Caiden Cleary replacing the injured Tom Papley, a major loss to their forward structure. While Sydney have been one of the competition’s most consistent sides in recent seasons, they are yet to find their best in 2024 and are still trying to establish cohesion in their ball use and scoring avenues.
Historically, this is a fixture the Swans have dominated, winning the last eight matchups between the two sides dating back to 2017. But this time, things feel different. The Kangaroos are no longer the easy beats they once were and appear more structured and resilient across the ground. With a growing core of young talent and renewed belief, they’ll view this as a genuine opportunity to shake off the Swans’ dominance and land a second big scalp in the early stages of the season. Expect a tight and spirited contest, but on their home deck and with more upside shown to date, North Melbourne might just be ready to flip the script.

Nick Larkey 3+ Goals – Kicking them for fun at the moment on the back of some better Roos ball movement, and he always takes his chances when they present.
Isaac Heeney 25+ Disposals – Will Phillips gets dropped for the Roos so it’s likely they won’t be running any hard tags. I think Heeney has a big game here.
Caleb Daniel 25+ Disposals – Just has that lovely roll picking up cheapies in defence. Should find his way to 25 again.
SGM Odds: $4.50 at BoomBet
