What a fantastic start to 2020 in the PGA Tour as we tipped Justin Thomas to take out the Sentry Tournament of Champions on the weekend at odds of $6.00! Our PGA Tour tips continue this week as we head to Wai’alae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii for the 2020 Sony Open!
As usual, we have a full preview and betting tips for all of the action, which officially gets the PGA Tour regular scheduled tournaments underway.
Sony Open Betting Tips
After just 36 players competed at the Tournament of Champions last week, the Sony Open will be the first full field event of the year, featuring some top line players who played at Kapalua and some who are making the trip to Hawaii for the final event in the Hawaiian swing.
The Field
Thomas, who claimed the Tournament of Champions crown last weekend, sits atop the FedEx Cup Standings and will be looking to win his third title of the season through when he headlines the Sony Open. Thomas will start as a heavy favourite ahead of a strong field which includes Patrick Reed, who he defeated in a playoff to win in Kapalua. Thomas will be among a bunch of previous winners of the Sony Open in Matt Kuchar, Patton Kizzire, Fabian Gomez and Jimmy Walker, who will all be looking to add another Sony Open title to their trophy case.
Some of the other top contenders at the pointy end of the betting markets include Webb Simpson, Colin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Marc Leisman and Joaquin Niemann.
The Course
The championship course at Wai’alae Country Club was designed by Seth Raynor and opened all the way back in 1927. It plays as a 7,044, Par 70 which doesn’t offer golfers a great challenge in length off the tee, in fact, it’s winning score which is usually in the high teens or low 20s under par suggests that it is one of the easier courses on tour.
The one factor that can increase the difficulty of the course is the wind conditions. As you’d expect in Hawaii, the course is located right on the ocean, which can wreak havoc with players who are unaccustomed to links courses.
Tips
Hard to look past Justin Thomas in the form he is in at the moment but we will attempt to provide some more value this week. Thomas is currently at around $6.00 to win while the next lowest price in the betting markets is around $13.
Really like the look of Patrick Reed this week after the maligned star just missed out on the title in Kapalua. He was far and away the hottest putter at the Tournament of Champions and should come into this week with plenty to play for after losing to Thomas in the playoff.
Reed has been in fantastic form to start the 2020 PGA Tour season, finishing T17 at the ZOZO Championship before reeling off three straight top 10s in a row at the WGC-HSBC (T8), the Hero World Challenge (3) and the Tournament of Champions (T2). Add in a great performance at the Presidents Cup and Reed is one of the in-form golfers in the world at the moment.
Was also good at Wai’alae Country Club last season, when he finished T13.
