The fourth game of BBL13 sees the competition head to Geelong as the Melbourne Renegades host the Perth Scorchers who begin their quest for a third straight title. Can the Renegades bounce back after a defeat against the Sixers? Or will the Scorchers send the Renegades to 0-2?

Quinton De Kock is likely to be unavailable once again due to playing in the Abu Dhabi T20 League, so the Renegades will be set to go with an unchanged lineup from Friday’s clash against the Sixers. Jake Fraser-McGurk played an entertaining cameo with 48 off 24, however the rest of the Renegades top order failed to fire with Nic Maddinson (6), Joe Clarke (6) and Jordan Cox (0) leaving the Renegades in a hole at 3/39.
With the ball it was the bookends of the innings that cost the Renegades the game against the Sixers. The Renegades conceded 0/58 off the first five overs of the game and after regaining control through the middle overs, the men in red allowed 31 runs off the final two overs as the Sixers got to a match winning score. Will Sutherland (2/21) and Adam Zampa (2/22) were outstanding with the ball, however it was in vain as the remaining bowlers all conceded above eight runs an over.
It was a lackluster performance with the bat from the Renegades that had them on the back foot early. With Jono Wells and Aaron Finch occupying five and six in the batting order, the Renegades power hitting lies solely in their top order. If they don’t get off to fast starts this season, they’re going to struggle to put up massive scores.

Perth Scorchers
Western Australian cricket has proven to be the deepest pool of talent in the country for a number of years, and it’s no surprise that the Scorchers have succeeded on the back of that. Even with Mitch Marsh and Lance Morris unlikely to feature much this season due to Australian duties, and Cameron Green declining a BBL contract to focus on playing for Australia, the Scorchers have a side that is still the envy of the competition.
The Scorchers have lost Cameron Bancroft (Sydney Thunder) and Peter Hatzoglou (Hobart Hurricanes), however that won’t upset the apple cart given the depth the Scorchers have in their stocks. It will be a slightly different looking side early in the season, however it’s still a side that will likely feature eleven players that have won at least one title for the Scorchers.
Ashton Agar is still recovering from the calf injury that ruled him out of the World Cup and is unlikely to feature in the Scorchers first two games, while Englishman Zak Crawley will also miss the first two games due to England’s ODI series in the Caribbean.
The returns of Englishmen Stephen Eskinazi and Laurie Evans will be huge for the Scorchers given how good they have been across the past few seasons respectively Eskinazi scored 216 runs in just nine games last season, including two fifties as he helped the Scorchers to the BBL12 title. Evans missed BBL12 after testing positive to a banned substance, but was the 14th highest run scorer in BBL11 with 361 runs at an average of 40.

Match Prediction
The Scorchers come into this season as title favorites and will be much fresher than the Renegades who will come into this game on the back of a short turnaround having played in Sydney on Friday night. Adam Voges’ side have dominated the Renegades across the history of the Big Bash, in what has been one of the most one sided matchups in the competition.
The Scorchers have a 15-3 record against the Renegades, and have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two sides. The Scorchers quality with the ball and their depth with the bat will be too strong for a Renegades outfit that failed to play with any level of consistency in their opening match of the tournament.

Josh Inglis will come into this summer full of confidence after being a part of Australia’s World Cup victory in India. Inglis has an excellent campaign in BBL12 scoring 431 runs at an average of 35, the third most runs in the competition. Inglis has reached the 20 run mark in two of his last three games against the Renegades.
Andrew Tye continues to get the job done year in, year out as one of the best bowlers in the Big Bash. In BBL12 Tye took the second most wickets in the tournament with 26 wickets at an average of 20. Tye has taken fifteen wickets against the Renegades which is the third most of any player in fixtures between the Renegades and Scorchers.
