2021 US Open Finals Preview and Betting Tips
Women’s Final - Leylah Fernandez vs Emma Raducanu
Sunday 6am AEST
You would’ve got some outrageous odds if you picked the two finalists in the women’s draw pre-tournament, with world #73 Leylah Fernandez set to take on world #150 Emma Raducanu.
19-year-old Leylah Fernandez has done it the hard way over the past fortnight en route to the final. The Canadian won her first two matches in straight sets but has needed three sets to dispatch each of her last four opponents. Her most impressive win came last time out against world #2 Aryna Sabalenka, whom she defeated 6-4 in the third set after trailing 1-4. That win was her third against a top five ranked player in this tournament alone.
18-year-old Emma Raducanu put herself on the map with her surprise run to the fourth round of Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago, but has become a household name on the back of her amazing run to the final at the US Open. She has absolutely destroyed all six opponents over the past fortnight, winning all matches in straight sets and none of those sets have required a tie-breaker. Raducanu’s best performance to date also came in the semi’s where she made world #18 Maria Sakkari look second rate in a 6-1, 6-4 smashing.
What an exciting match we have on our hands here and perhaps one that is a sign of things to come in the future. Of the two players, Fernandez has by far had the tougher run to the final and will be feeling at least some type of fatigue. Raducanu has hit her opponents off the court in far less time and should have plenty left in the tank after winning her semi-final in just 85 minutes. With that in mind coupled by that fact that she’s playing the slightly better tennis of the two, we’re happy to be with Raducanu to get the job done in straight sets.
Men’s Final - Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev
Monday 6am AEST
In complete contrast to the women’s draw, the men’s draw at this year’s US Open has gone almost perfectly to script. World #1 Novak Djokovic and world #2 Daniil Medvedev were first and second favourite to win the title pre-tournament, respectively, and they’re the two men who will fight it out on Monday morning.
20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic hasn’t quite been at his absolute dominant best over the past fortnight, but he’s done enough to give himself a chance to complete the calendar Grand Slam, which was last done by Rod Laver in 1969. Djokovic has dropped the opening set in each of his last four matches and needed a fifth set in order to defeat world #4 Alexander Zverev in the semi’s.
25-year-old Daniil Medvedev has been the most consistent threat to the big three of all the ‘next gen’ players in recent years and will be playing in his third Grand Slam final when he takes to the court on Monday. The Russian has now made the semi’s of the US Open in each of his last three attempts and it was in this tournament that he made his first Grand Slam final back in 2019 when he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Medvedev has had a comfortable run to the final this time around, dropping just one set from his six matches.
Daniil Medvedev was our best bet to win the title pre-tournament, so we certainly won’t be opposing him now that he’s in the final on Monday. While Djokovic is the deserving favourite due to his dominance on hard courts at major tournaments in recent years, Medvedev is every chance of pushing him all the way on this occasion. We’re expecting a really hard-fought match that will see the total match games sail over the current line of 38.5.
