PGA Tour: RBC Canadian Open Betting Tips

Hamilton Golf & Country Club, Thursday 30th June - Sunday 2nd July

The Charles Schwab Challenge was played out on an extremely somber note over the weekend after the tragic news broke that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away in the midst of the tournament.

Before You Bet selections both made the cut but did not perform as expected, as Jordan Spieth finished T37 and Brendon Todd finished T50. We’ll look to bounce back this week with the Canadian Open, the final tournament before three straight elevated events.

The Field

Due to the massive stretch of golf coming up which sees the Memorial Tournament, U.S. Open and Travelers Championship over the next three weeks, a majority of the top players in the world have opted to take the week off to prepare. Rory McIlroy is the only player ranked inside the OWGR Top 10 that will be making a start this week.

Other top names in the field include Tommy Fleetwood, Sahith Theegala, Corey Conners, Shane Lowry, Alex Noren, Sam Burns and Cameron Young.

Past winners of the Canadian Open who will be looking to add another trophy to the case include McIlroy, Nick Taylor and Brandt Snedeker, Tim Clark.

The Course

Hamilton Golf and Country Club, Ancaster, Ontario
7,084 yards, Par 70

Hamilton Golf and Country Club, a prominent Canadian facility, is set to host the RBC Canadian Open for the seventh occasion this week.

However, the course has undergone significant changes since the PGA TOUR’s last visit in 2019. Following Rory McIlroy’s impressive victory five years ago, the club embarked on an extensive $8.5-million restoration project led by the esteemed architect Martin Ebert.

While shorter hitters can remain competitive by excelling with their short irons and wedges, the recent course renovations at Hamilton Golf and Country Club favor longer hitters who consistently find the fairway. The revamped layout presents an opportunity for these powerful players to create distance from their competitors, especially considering that many of the tee-related challenges occur around the 300-yard mark. In essence, Hamilton’s defenses are minimal against golfers who can confidently navigate these trouble spots.

Betting Tips

Shane Lowry ($26/$2.26 Top 20)

McIlroy comes into the tournament as the almost unbackable favourite but I’m looking to his compatriot for a bit more value this week. The Irishman has been in stellar form of late, picking up the Zurich Classic a few weeks ago alongside before another impressive performance at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago, finishing T6. Finished T2 behind McIlroy the last time the Canadian Open was held at Hamilton.

Taylor Pendrith ($61/$2.240 Top 30)

Looking at a Canadian as the value play this week and Taylor Pendrith has been the best of the bunch throughout the PGA Tour season so far. Won his maiden PGA Tour title a few weeks ago at the Byron Nelson and has been great recently dispute just missing the cut at the PGA Championship. Finished T11 or better in his four previous tournaments.
