Match Preview

Collingwood were blown away in the second half by GWS, as the Giants ran riot against a slow Collingwood outfit. The Pies had a horrible day converting their inside 50’s, converting only 10.9% of their inside 50’s into goals, kicking 6.16 in a horror showing in front of goal.

Collingwood won contested possessions (+21), clearances (+4) and inside 50’s (+1), but they were obliterated on the outside and in transition. The Pies were -29 for uncontested possessions and -20 for tackles, as GWS scored 64 points from their defensive half. Collingwood will have to improve the transition defence if they are to be a contender in 2025.

Dan Houston will make his debut for the Pies against his old side, pairing on half back with Josh Daicos who recorded a team high 28 disposals in Opening Round.

It’s been a tough off season on the injury front for Port Adelaide, with an abundance of injuries to key position players. Todd Marshall (Achilles) will likely miss the season, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (back) is out for 7-9 weeks, while Esava Ratugolea (knee) will have to pass a fitness test to play this weekend.

On top of their injuries in their key position posts, the Power will be without their best player Zak Butters, who will miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. It puts a lot of pressure on skipper Connor Rozee and Jason Horne-Francis to produce games through the midfield.

In 2024 Port Adelaide ranked 12th in the AFL for contested possessions, 15th for ground ball gets and 15th for possessions. Collingwood built their premiership success in 2023 on the back of their dominance at ground balls, and will be eager to expose the Power in this area.

The battle of the midfield looms as an area Collingwood should be able to get on top of against Port Adelaide. Harry Perryman (28 disposals) was good in his first game for the Pies, while Nick Daicos was everywhere before cramps reduced his influence in the second half. If Collingwood can get increased production out of Scott Pendlebury and Jack Crisp, it’s going to allow the Pies to play the game in their front half.

There are also plenty of questions around the Power’s defence, with no Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and potentially Esava Ratugolea, there is a mountain of pressure on Aliir Aliir. Jeremy Finlayson showed plenty from an offensive standpoint as a defender during the pre-season, however there’s still questions over his defensive work. With the Pies three talls in Michoeck, McStay and Membrey having a game under their belt, they should be able to stretch Port Adelaide’s defence.

Collingwood’s recent record against the Power should provide plenty of optimism that the Magpies will bounce back on Saturday night. Collingwood have won four straight games against the Power, with three of those four games being played at the MCG. The last two games that were played between the two clubs at the MCG saw Collingwood come out on top by margins of 42 and 71 points.

With such a small line and injuries to key personnel for Port Adelaide, Collingwood -4.5 is where we’ll be going in this clash.

Collingwood -4.5

Nick Daicos 30+ Disposals: After copping plenty of criticism for his second half cramping, expect the Collingwood superstar to send a statement on Saturday night. Daicos averaged 30.6 disposals per game in 2024 and 31 disposals per game in 2025. Daicos has enjoyed playing against the Power, having recorded 30+ disposals in 2 of his last three games against Port Adelaide.

Harry Perryman 20+ Disposals: Harry Perryman enjoyed a good outing on debut for Collingwood, with the former Giant enjoying his opportunity to play in the midfield recording 27 disposals. Perryman attended 52% of centre bounces in Opening Round, the most he’d attended in a game since Round 9 2023. Perryman will provide plenty of value in disposal markets early in the season with a bigger role in the midfield.

Bobby Hill Anytime Goalscorer: Bobby Hill has established himself as one of the best small forwards in the competition, and one of the most reliable anytime goal scoring options. Hill has kicked a goal in 6 of his last 7 games, and has kicked 63 goals in 47 games for Collingwood.

SGM Odds: $3.40 at BoomBet
