2024 AFL Round 23 Preview & Betting Tips
Gold Coast vs Melbourne
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, August 17th, People First Stadium
It took 22 rounds and a kick after the siren, but Gold Coast finally managed to win a game on the road! They took down a disappointing Essendon outfit by a single point last weekend thanks to some post-siren heroics from Mac Andrew.
The Suns also snapped a three-match losing run with that win and brought their season win tally up to double-figures for just the third time in club history. They now also have a chance to make this their winningest season if they’re to salute in one of their final two games.
In positive lineup news, Touk Miller returns to the side after missing the last couple of weeks through injury, and he’ll be replacing Alex Sexton. That is the sole change Damien Hardwick and his coaching staff have made this week.
In contrast, Melbourne suffered a narrow defeat in their recent outing against an in-form Port Adelaide side. They tried their guts out despite being heavily undermanned, but unfortunately didn’t get reward for effort on the scoreboard.
The Demons have now lost four games on the spin, two of which were by a combined four points, while the other two were blowouts on the road. In fact, the Demons have now lost six straight on their travels and the majority of them have been by large margins.
In lineup news for the Dees, Clayton Oliver leaves the side after some horrible form and Jake Bowey makes his return to the senior side.
Match Prediction: The Demons can hold their heads up high after their immense effort against the Power, but now they have to back it up again on the road where they’ve struggled mightily of late. On the flip side, the Suns have been one of the best home sides this season with only one loss to their name at PFS. With all of that in mind, I’m keen to be on the Suns to cover the small spread.

Gold Coast H2H – For the reasons mentioned above.
Sam Flanders 25+ Disposals – He’s had superb season and is as consistent as they come. I’m expecting him to be at his accumulating best here.
Trent Rivers 25+ Disposals – I’ve loved his form since moving into the midfield. He’s been finding plenty of footy and that should continue in this one.
SGM Odds: $3.75 at BoomBet
