2024 AFL Round 21 Preview & Betting Tips
Western Bulldogs vs Melbourne
Friday 7:15pm AEST, August 2nd, Marvel Stadium
The Western Bulldogs looked to be in good touch after a couple of solid wins and certainly franked that form with a huge road win over the Swans last weekend, which saw them soar into the top eight and assert themselves among the genuine contenders.
The Bulldogs have now won five of their past six games and currently occupy eighth spot on the ladder. However, the tightness of the competition this season means a win could see them momentarily fly into fourth, whereas a loss could see them finish the round in 10th.
Unsurprisingly, the Bulldogs remain unchanged from the side that disamantled the ladder-leading Swans last weekend. It seems as though Caleb Daniel will wear the sub vest once more.
Meanwhile, Melbourne will be licking their wounds after last weekend’s devastating defeat against the Giants. The Demons flew out of the blocks to lead by 27 points at the first change, but were eventually overrun and suffered a two-point defeat (83-85).
That’s now back-to-back losses for the Demons who currently sit in 11th spot on the ladder. They’ve been hit by the injury bug in a bad way and it looks as though they’ll be looking on when September comes around unless something drastic changes.
The Demons have made three changes at selection this week, only one of which was forced. Howes, Sparrow, and Tholstrup come in, while Windsor, Billings, and Laurie make way.
Match Prediction: A lot of the modern day footy is based off clearance work and there’s a big difference in that aspect between the clubs over the past five games. The Dogs rank inside the top four whereas the Demons are in the bottom four, which perhaps isn’t a surprise considering Petracca is out and Oliver is underdone.
With the Dogs clearly having the ascendancy in the middle of the park, I worry that the Demons backs won’t be able to hold down the fort over the four quarters, and while they might put up a fight at stages, it seems as though the Dogs should have the answers.

There should be plenty of goals in the perfect conditions at Marvel on Friday, so we’ve gone that way with our Same Game Multi. Cody Weightman (2+ Goals) has been fantastic this season and has a great record at the venue, as does Bailey Fritsch (2+ Goals) for the Dees. Rhylee West (1+ Goal) has also been in career-best form of late and should get on the end of one again here.
SGM Odds: $3.20 at QuestBet
