2024 AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
Melbourne vs West Coast Eagles
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, July 7th, MCG
Early in the year it looked like Melbourne were a top four team and a premiership threat, but the wheels have well and truly come off over the last couple of months, losing five of their last seven. They were narrowly beaten by Brisbane last week, but really, the Lions should have won by 10+ goals but were very poor in front of goal, which allowed Melbourne to get into the contest. The remarkable thing about these two sides is that in Round 10, the Eagles gave them a touch up, but on recent efforts and form, I doubt that result will be repeated at the MCG, otherwise some serious questions need to be asked about Melbourne and what is going on inside their four walls. They do get some big ins though with Salem and Bowey returning, as well as veteran Jake Melksham, who could provide some spark up forward.
The questions are already being asked about West Coast, after they were pathetic against Hawthorn last Sunday at home. They pretty much played as if it was a practice match, with zero intensity and were made to look like they were in a training drill for the Hawks. That has led to speculation that long time coach Adam Simpson could well be losing the dressing room and is on the verge of being sacked. The response on Sunday will be fascinating because on paper, Melbourne are well and truly there to be beaten if the Eagles played with similar venom to what they did when these two sides clashed in round ten.
On paper, Melbourne should comfortably, but really, if the Eagles come to play, then they have the potential to cause an upset. We'll lean towards the home side at the line.

Melbourne to win: There isn't a lot of value, but you just have to think surely, especially at home, that Melbourne get the win.
Clayton Oliver 25+ Disposals: In the last four games between these two teams, Clayton Oliver has averaged 29 disposals. His 2024 form as a whole has been really poor vs previous years, but I think in a game like this, he should get plenty of the Sherrin.
Jeremy McGovern 25+ Disposals: I think it could be a tough afternoon for the Eagles back six, so I am suspecting that the ball will be there a fair bit and that should lead to defenders for the Eagles getting a decent amount of touches. He got 25 touches five rounds ago.
