2024 AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
St Kilda vs Sydney
Sunday 3:20pm AEST, July 7th, Marvel Stadium
It’s been a dirty season for St Kilda on all fronts. After making the finals last year and having another pre-season with Ross the Boss in charge, fans were expecting further improvement or to at least feature in September action once more. However, inability to win in close games early on in the season zapped the confidence out of the Saints and they now enter Round 17 with a dismal 5-10 record.
The Saints suffered another close defeat last weekend when they went down to the Power by two points on home soil (60-62) and remarkably, that is now six losses by 10 or less points this season.
Making matters worse, the Saints suffered four injuries in their recent defeat, with Max King (knee) being the biggest blow. As a result, the Saints have made five changes at selection, with Mattaes Phillipou headlining the ins after the former top 10 pick spent a number of weeks searching for form at VFL level.
Elsewhere, Sydney had their huge 10-game win streak snapped in Round 16 when they were defeated by the Dockers (98-99). The Swans have made a habit of being slow starters in recent weeks but it finally came back to bite them last outing.
Still, there were some positives to come out of the defeat for the Swans. They never gave up despite trailing for the majority of the game, and were unlucky not to complete the comeback with Logan McDonald failing to score with his long shot after the siren.
The Swans have had a rather blessed run with injury this season and have only made the two changes at selection this week, one of which was forced. Robbie Fox and Matt Roberts are set to come in for Harry Cunningham (injured) and Caiden Cleary (omitted).
Match Prediction: In some ways, it was healthy for the Swans to taste defeat last weekend as a bit of a wake-up call. And unfortunately for the Saints, they’ll once again come up against a team looking to bounce back from a poor performance – it feels as though they’ve played a dozen of these types of games this season.
The Saints have been hit by the injury bug and that makes it extremely difficult for them to compete with the highly-talented Swans here. It’s no surprise to see the Swans priced as the clear favourites, and I expect them to bounce straight back with a big win.

Sydney to Win – The Swans have the clear class edge in this one and should be winning.
Logan McDonald 2+ Goals – Re-signed midweek and will be looking to immediately repay the faith. He’ll get a nice matchup.
Mitch Owens 1+ Goal – Always dangerous up forward and knows where the goals are. He remains great value in the goal scorer markets.
