2024 AFL Round 10 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney vs Carlton
Friday 7:40pm AEST, May 17th, SCG
Ladder-leaders, Sydney will get their chance to host Friday night footy at the SCG in Sir Doug Nicholls Round. They’ve put together a superb opening nine rounds of the season with their lone blemish surprisingly coming against the 17th placed Tigers in Round 3.
The Swans head into Round 10 on a five-game win streak with their most recent win coming in dominant fashion against the Dockers (87-39). Isaac Heeney continued his blistering 2024 season and should pick up a couple of Brownlow votes for his efforts.
Unsurprisingly, the Swans will be running it back with a similar squad again this weekend, with only the one change being made. Matt Roberts has been managed after a couple of quieter weeks, and Braeden Campbell gets his chance at the top level. Notably, Luke Parker remains on the outer despite superb form in the reserves.
Carlton began the season with a bang, winning each of their first four games; however, as it’s turned out all four of those wins were against teams currently outside the top eight.
The Blues haven’t quite been as good since the opening month as they’ve won only two of their last five matches, although both of those wins were against fellow contenders in the Giants (117-98) and most recently the Demons (77-76).
A big plus for the Blues has been the form of Sam Walsh since his return from a serious back injury. He’s now played five games since returning in Round 5 and has tallied 31+ disposals on each occasion.
The bad news for the Blues is their growing injury list. They lost a trio of players to injury last weekend with Matthew Cottrell, Adam Cerra, and Jack Martin all suffering soft tissues. However, Zac Williams and Caleb Marchbank are a couple of handy ins.
Match Prediction: The home side has dominated this matchup for a number of years now, winning each of the last five meetings and nine of the past 11. Their most recent meeting was at the MCG in an elimination final last year which the Blues won by six points (74-68). They also met at the SCG in 2023 in Round 11 and it was the Swans who ran out 26-point winners (77-51).
The Swans are the deserving favourites on the back of their superior form, coupled with home ground advantage. However, the Blues are certainly no easy-beats and have made a habit of playing in close matches over the past 12 months. With that said, I fancy the Swans in 1-39 margin range.
