The Warrnambool Cup and Grand Annual Steeplechase greets followers on what is the last day of the three-day carnival at The Bool. The weather looks as though it’s going to stay sunny, and punters will be keen to go home with a collect after the last.
After the first two days, we have settled around evens, but I have a few I like throughout the program. The first of 10 will start at 11:15am (AEST), and runners will be running on a Soft track.
The inside part of the track was the place to be on Wednesday and on pace was a positive as those from the back failed to come on from out wide, so we will have to be mindful of that on day 3. Find Brendan Bunworth’s best bets for the day below and good luck if following!
Warrnambool Racing Tips: Thursday, May 2nd 2024
Race 4: J Catanach Memorial Fillies and Mares Handicap - 12:45pm (AEST)
(5) Mawkeb I tipped on here last start but she was unplaced. She was said to be lame after the race so I will give him another go here. He has barrier 1 which may be an advantage and his 3rd at Lakeside two starts back was very good on a Good surface. She is very fit now but the only real knock is that she hasn’t won in more than 10 months.
(3) Miss Galore was the beaten fav last start (2nd) but has to be respected after running a 1st and 2nd at her only two runs on the Soft. She is third up now and fitter.
(6) Chill The Crug runs well for Daniel Moor and likes Soft tracks. Should settle midfield and will track into the race from there.
(5) Mawkeb
$6.50 (1 Unit)
Race 6: Evergreen Turf Neville Wilson Final - 1:50pm (AEST)
(9) Unseen Ruler I tipped here on day 1 but the Williams stable decided to scratch in preference for being fresher for this. Forget last start at Caulfield where he got too far back and go on his good efforts at Terang and Caulfield before that. Childs rides for the first time and the early pace in the race should ensure he is able to run on well. Barrier 14 is a slight concern but conditions may change overnight.
(6) Hasseltoff was fair on Tuesday when 5th but gets barrier 1 here which may be the place to be. He is over the odds and he likes this distance.
(1) Picaroon would appreciate the track not being rain affected and might run a cheeky race at double figure odds. Weatherley has her confidence up and the horse has drawn well in barrier 3.
(9) Unseen Ruler
$6.00 (1 Unit)
Race 7: Grand Annual Steeplechase - 2:30pm (AEST)
(3) Bell Ex One was scratched in the Brierly on Tuesday which was a fantastic race in which Stern Idol win. Andrew Bobbin and Will Gordon thought that it may be better to wait for the Grand Final itself. To win, Bobbin and the team are going to have to beat Maher and Wilde who know how to win this race. His best run in the campaign was the 2nd at Kyneton on April 11.
(2) Rockstar Ronnie won this race last year and has won 7 of 19 starts. Loves The Bool and has won half of his career starts on the Soft.
(5) Vanguard is very strong and can carry weight. He gets weight relief from the above 2 and has the in-form Kuru on top. He likes Soft tracks and looked good winning a trial just 2 weeks ago.
(3) Bell Ex One
$3.80 (1 Unit)
Race 9: Warrnambool Cup - 3:55pm (AEST)
(4) Little Mix is very fit and had no luck when 2nd in the Mornington Cup. That effort was very solid and she did make up good late ground. She does have to carry 2.5kg but gets the experienced Shinn on top this time and he knows how to win the big races. When racing at Rosehill during March she also raced very well and you get the feeling Neasham has planned this campaign well with the final tilt being this race.
(10) Ferago won a trial at The Bool which was on the Soft and has opted to get Stackhouse on top again. He was too far back in the Mount Gambier Cup and really had no hope catching them after they went slow. Nice odds here.
(9) Fengerada gets in well with 54kg after running 2nd behind Rolls on Tuesday.
(4) Little Mix
$3.70 (2 Units)
