2023 AFL Brownlow Round 9 Overview
A few new names will be in the Brownlow votes for Round 9 with the likes of Joe Daniher, Mason Cox, Matt Rowell and 2017 Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin all likely to poll maximum votes this round. Nick Daicos should maintain his lead with a couple of votes in Round 9 but the consistency of Melbourne duo Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca is hard to overlook as they are starting to challenge the leaders. Also in the hunt is Adelaide skipper Jordan Dawson who looks a touch of value at around $15 on Betfair.

The Tigers started the round with a Friday night upset as they rolled the reigning premiers. Nathan Broad (19 disposals, 7 marks) also did a solid job to keep Jeremy Cameron to just one goal. The Cats didn’t have too many winners on the ground but Mitch Duncan (25 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) was probably their best.

Tim Taranto - 2
Jayden Short - 1
West Coast 6.7.43 def by Gold Coast 16.17.113
This match was buried in a rare Friday night double header time slot as the Suns got a big win against the hapless Eagles. Matt Rowell was a beast with 29 disposals, 17 tackles, 6 clearances and a goal in one of his best games for the club. Charlie Ballard was superb in defence with a record-equalling 10 intercept marks among his 14 disposals and 11 marks for the game. Noah Anderson (27 disposals, 8 clearances), Bailey Humphrey (20 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 goal) and Ben King (15 disposals, 7 marks, 4 goals) were also important. Stand-in skipper Liam Duggan was best for the Eagles with 32 disposals.

Ben King - 0.5
Liam Duggan - 0.5
Sydney 13.8.86 def by Fremantle 16.7.103
Fremantle secured their best win of the season over an undermanned Swans who are now under pressure to reach the finals. Sean Darcy (18 disposals, 44 hitouts, 9 clearances) was huge in the middle to give first advantage to Caleb Serong (33 disposals, 8 clearances), Andrew Brayshaw (31 disposals, 7 clearances) and Jaegar O’Meara (27 disposals, 8 tackles). Luke Jackson was also influential up forward with 17 disposals, 7 marks, 11 hitouts and 3 goals. However the best player on the ground was arguably Errol Gulden who amassed 39 disposals, 6 marks, 8 clearances and 2 goals in the losing effort. It will be interesting to see which way this one goes on Brownlow night.

Zak Butters (32 disposals, 9 marks), Connor Rozee (25 disposals, 6 clearances), Miles Bergman (21 disposals, 10 marks) and Jeremy Finlayson (20 disposals, 3 goals) were among the best for Port. Veteran Todd Goldstein was the best big man on the ground with 24 disposals, 11 clearances and a massive 56 hitouts in one of his best games in recent times.

Todd Goldstein - 2

Hawthorn 7.7.49 def by Melbourne 15.13.103
The Hawks rallied in the third quarter but otherwise, the Demons were in full control to land a comfortable win. Usual suspects Clayton Oliver (34 disposals, 8 marks, 1 goal), Jack Viney (31 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal) and Christian Petracca (30 disposals, 6 clearances) were excellent and will feature in the Brownlow votes but it's hard to split them. James Sicily (27 disposals, 8 marks) and Jai Newcombe (26 disposals, 6 clearances, 1 goal) were best for the Hawks.
Christian Petracca - 2
Clayton Oliver - 2
Jack Viney - 2

Carlton 8.11.59 def by Western Bulldogs 11.13.79
The Blues are out of the eight, and it’s going to be a hard road back for them, while the Dogs continue to climb following their victory on Saturday night. Tom Liberatore (26 disposals, 9 tackles, 13 clearances, 1 goal), Bailey Smith (30 disposals, 10 clearances, 1 goal) and Bailey Dale (28 disposals, 7 marks) were very good, while Brownlow favourite Marcus Bontempelli was good with 25 disposals and 9 tackles, but it might not be enough for a vote here. Sam Walsh (29 disposals, 8 marks, 1 goal) and Matthew Kennedy (27 disposals, 6 tackles, 8 clearances) were best for Carlton.
Tom Liberatore - 3
Bailey Smith - 2
Sam Walsh - 1
Adelaide 19.7.121 def St Kilda 10.9.69
Has the bubble burst at St Kilda? The Crows are now in the top eight as they belted the Saints to bring them back to the pack. Jordan Dawson (33 disposals, 6 clearances) and Brodie Smith (32 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal) won a ton of ball while Taylor Walker was dominant with 5 goals from 16 disposals and 8 marks. Brad Crouch (30 disposals, 7 clearances) and Rowan Marshall (10 disposals, 8 tackles, 49 hitouts) were best for the Saints.
Taylor Walker - 2.5
Jordan Dawson - 2.5
Brodie Smith - 1
Collingwood 18.12.120 def GWS Giants 7.13.55
The Pies are a game clear on top of the ladder after thrashing the Giants to wrap up Round 9. Mason Cox was huge with 19 disposals, 9 marks, 24 hitouts and 2 goals in one of his best-ever games. Nick Daicos (41 disposals), Jordan De Goey (31 disposals, 7 clearances, 1 goal) and Tom Mitchell (36 disposals, 6 marks) will all be fighting it out for the Brownlow votes. Lachie Ash (32 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) was great for the Giants but seems unlikely to poll.
Mason Cox - 3
Nick Daicos - 2
Jordan De Goey - 1
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
