Carlton 11.8.74 def by Brisbane 15.10.100

The Lions kicked off Round 8 with a strong win over the Blues to confirm their position as a premiership contender. Josh Dunkley was back to his old best with a massive game - 33 disposals, 11 marks, 13 tackles, 6 clearances and a huge 172 AFL Fantasy points. Hugh McLuggage (27 disposals, 6 clearances) and Jarrod Berry (29 disposals, 9 marks) had better games, and Charlie Cameron finished their work with 4 goals from 12 disposals and 6 tackles. Special mention to the great work of Jack Payne (13 disposals, 9 marks) who was a blanket on Charlie Curnow to keep him to just 1 goal. Adam Cerra (33 disposals, 7 tackles, 7 clearances,1 goal) and Sam Docherty (28 disposals, 7 marks, 7 tackles,1 goal) were best for the Blues.

Max Holmes (22 disposals, 8 tackles, 1 goal), Tom Stewart (24 disposals, 8 marks) and Jeremy Cameron (15 disposals, 3 goals) were good, while Esava Ratugolea impressed with 13 disposals and 8 marks in defence. Gold Coast Suns 13.7.85 def by Melbourne 13.12.90

The Dees will be relieved to escape with the points away from home as they scraped home against the gallant Suns. The best on ground was arguably from the losing side as Noah Anderson was elite with 36 disposals, 10 clearances, 5 tackles and a goal. Wil Powell (25 disposals, 11 marks) and Darcy Macpherson (30 disposals, 7 marks) were best for the Suns. For the Dees, it was tough to find clear winners. Clayton Oliver (28 disposals, 6 marks, 6 clearances) was below his best but willed his side home in the last quarter. Christian Petracca (26 disposals, 1 goal) and Max Gawn (15 disposals, 6 marks, 17 hitouts, 2 goals) were also important.

Noah Anderson - 3
Christian Petracca - 1

GWS Giants 10.11.71 def by Western Bulldogs 13.8.86

The Dogs scrapped a win against the Giants to move into the eight in tough conditions in Canberra. Marcus Bontempelli was immense with 32 disposals (25 contested), 7 tackles, 14 clearances and a goal. He went head-to-head with Tom Green who was almost as good with 38 disposals, 9 tackles, 8 clearances, 3 goals and a whopping 170 AFL Fantasy points. It’s only a question of who will get the 1 Brownlow vote. One of Tim English (23 disposals, 10 marks, 40 hitouts), Bailey Smith (32 disposals), Josh Kelly (34 disposals, 6 tackles) and Lachie Whitfield (31 disposals, 10 marks) would seem most likely.

The Swans won plenty of ball with Errol Gulden (37 disposals, 13 marks, 7 clearances), Luke Parker (34 disposals) and Callum Mills (31 disposals, 9 marks) among the leading disposal winners, but they couldn’t convert that onto the scoreboard.

Scott Pendlebury - 3

It wasn’t exactly an advert for AFL footy as the Saints did what they had to do over the Kangaroos in a pretty ugly scrap. For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
