2023 AFL Brownlow Round 4 Overview
The Easter long weekend brought us five days of big AFL action and there were plenty of great performances. Perhaps none were better than the 7-goal haul from Jeremy Cameron on Easter Monday as he strives to break the mould of the midfield dominance in the Brownlow Medal award. Clayton Oliver, Christian Petracca and Marcus Bontempelli are polling well early in the season but it might be Nick Daicos who is in front after Round 4, depending if he can poll votes in a losing effort this round.

Brisbane 18.8.116 def Collingwood 11.17.83
Brisbane continue to make the Gabba a fortress as they stopped the run of the Pies. Cam Rayner was surprisingly the one who provided the spark up forward to get the Lions going as he kicked 4 goals from 17 disposals to setup the win. Charlie Cameron also cashed in with 6 goals from his 14 touches, while Joe Daniher bounced back from media criticism to finish with 20 disposals, 6 marks and 2 goals. Nick Daicos was again a star, with a scintillating third quarter when thrown onto the ball, as he finished with 38 disposals and 2 goals in a lone hand for the Magpies.
Cam Rayner - 3
Nick Daicos - 2
Charlie Cameron - 1
North Melbourne 11.18.84 def by Carlton 16.11.107
The Roos stuck with the Blues for a half before the twin towers of Charlie Curnow (6 goals, 16 disposals, 9 marks) and Harry McKay (4 goals, 16 disposals, 14 marks) overpowered the under-sized Roos defence. Mitch McGovern (27 disposals, 6 marks) and Patrick Cripps (30 disposals, 9 clearances) were also solid contributors. Harry Sheezel (37 disposals) continued his great form, while Luke Davies-Uniacke (30 disposals) and Jy Simpkin (29 disposals, 6 clearances) were good in the middle for the Roos.
Charlie Curnow - 2.5
Harry McKay - 2.5
Mitch McGovern - 1
Adelaide 17.9.111 def Fremantle 10.12.72
While there was debate over Jordan Dawson winning the Showdown Medal last week, there were no doubts that he was best-on-ground against Fremantle with 27 disposals, 6 tackles and a goal. Josh Rachele (20 disposals, 3 goals) and Izak Rankine (15 disposals, 3 goals) hit the scoreboard, while Riley Thilthorpe (18 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal) provided a presence in the air. Caleb Serong (28 disposals, 7 tackles, 10 clearances) and Andy Brayshaw (31 disposals, 7 tackles) tried hard for the Dockers.
Jordan Dawson - 3
Izak Rankine - 1

The Dogs held off the Tigers in a wet-weather thriller at the G. Bailey Dale (30 disposals) was back to his best, while Marcus Bontempelli (25 disposals, 12 tackles, 11 clearances), Tom Liberatore (23 disposals, 10 tackles, 7 clearances, 2 goals) and Tim English (20 disposals, 23 hitouts, 9 marks, 2 goals) all thrived in the conditions. Tim Taranto (27 disposals, 8 tackles, 1 goal), Daniel Rioli (29 disposals, 7 tackles) and Dustin Martin (23 disposals, 1 goal) were best for the Tigers.

The Saints remain undefeated and on top of the ladder as they disposed of the Suns. Jack Higgins (5 goals, 22 disposals) and Mitch Owens (27 disposals, 2 goals) were the stars up forward for the Saints, with Brad Crouch (34 disposals, 8 tackles, 6 clearances) and Jack Sinclair (31 disposals,1 goal) both busy as ever. Noah Anderson (38 disposals, 10 tackles, 7 clearances, 1 goal) was huge for the Suns, while Touk Miller (32 disposals, 8 tackles, 10 clearances) was also productive.

Sydney 9.10.64 def by Port Adelaide 9.12.66
A dramatic finish at the SCG where a kick after the siren by Oli Florent fell just short of the line to give the Power a big away victory. Before that, Florent had been one of the best on ground and a goal would’ve confirmed the three votes for his 33 disposals, 6 marks, 890 metres gained and a goal. Instead, it was Aliir Aliir (16 disposals, 5 marks) was the hero for his punch away on the goal line. Chad Warner (30 disposals, 9 clearances, 2 goals), Zak Butters (27 disposals, 1 goal) and Jeremy Finlayson (18 disposals, 8 marks, 3 goals) were the other influential players on the ground.
Chad Warner - 2.5
Oli Florent - 2.5
Jeremy Finlayson - 1
Essendon 11.22.88 def GWS Giants 11.9.75
An inaccurate Bombers secured the win over the Giants, but it could’ve been by more if they kicked straight! Jake Stringer was the difference, and the culprit, as he kicked 4 goals, 6 behinds, among 15 disposals. Mason Redman (27 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles, 1 goal), Zach Merrett (28 disposals, 1 goal) and Nic Martin (24 disposals, 2 goals) were also very good. Tom Green (34 disposals, 5 clearances) was a contested beast, with Josh Kelly (28 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 goals) and Nick Haynes (26 disposals, 17 marks) also good for the Giants.
Jake Stringer - 3
Mason Redman - 2
Tom Green - 1
West Coast 9.9.63 def by Melbourne 19.12.126
The Demons were far too strong for the depleted Eagles and had winners all over the ground. Clayton Oliver (34 disposals, 10 tackles, 10 clearances) and Christian Petracca (29 disposals, 8 marks, 3 goals) and Brodie Grundy (22 disposals, 33 hitouts, 6 tackles, 7 clearances) were powerful in the middle while Tom McDonald (4 goals, 16 disposals, 6 marks) cashed in up forward. Tim Kelly played a lone hand for the Eagles with 36 disposals, 5 tackles, 5 clearances and 2 goals and might pinch a vote.
Clayton Oliver - 3
Christian Petracca - 2
Tim Kelly - 1
Geelong 19.13.127 def Hawthorn 6.9.45
The Hawks kicked the first three goals, and led at half-time, before the Cats went bang with ten goals to none in the third quarter, and 16 of the last 17 goals in the match. Jeremy Cameron was the star with 7 goals from 22 disposals and 9 marks as he asserts himself as the best player in the competition. Mitch Duncan (31 disposals, 14 marks) returned from injury with a great game, with Patrick Dangerfield (27 disposals, 10 clearances, 1 goal), and Gryan Miers (25 disposals, 7 marks) also strong. Will Day (22 disposals, 8 tackles, 6 clearances) was a stand out for the Hawks.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
