Tasmania JackJumpers vs Cairns Taipans
Saturday 5:30pm AEDT, January 5th, MyState Bank Arena
First up in Saturday night’s double-header is the JackJumpers vs Taipans in the Apple Isle. Both teams enter this clash having won only one of their three games in the past two rounds, so there will be extra incentive to bounce back in this one. For the JackJumpers, they’ve uncharacteristically lost three on the bounce on home soil, most recently falling 93-98 to the in-form Breakers. In contrast, the Snakes won their most recent game against United comfortably, but lost their two games prior and conceded over 100 points on both occasions. Neither club would be pleased with their form over the past couple of rounds, but it’s still the JackJumpers who have the most upside. They’ve taken care of the Snakes in each of their last two meetings including their only matchup in NBL24, defeating them 87-79 on the road. I like this matchup for the JackJumpers and believe they can return to form with a big win on Saturday.

Adelaide 36ers vs Melbourne United
Saturday 8pm AEDT, January 5th, Adelaide Entertainment Centre
Another pair of old rivals will come together in the second game on Friday night, with the Adelaide 36ers taking on Melbourne United. The 36ers are coming off a pair of losses in Round 13, one to the Wildcats and the other against the Hawks. They’ve now lost eight of their last 10 games and sit firmly on the bottom of the ladder. In contrast, United were superb in their most recent outing, destroying the defending champion Kings by 16 points on enemy soil. They kept the Kings to only 85 points which was their best defensive effort in a number of weeks. Defensive intensity was clearly a focus for Dean Vickerman’s men last start and I suspect that will be the case again on Saturday. With that in mind, I like their chances of keeping the 36ers to 87 points or less.

Sydney Kings vs Brisbane Bullets
Sunday 4pm AEDT, January 6th, Qudos Bank Arena
The Kings were in action in the opening game of Round 14 when they hosted United on Thursday night. They led the ladder-leaders narrowly at the half but were completely outplayed after the break to end up 16-point losers. The Kings have lost six of their last nine games and are now only one game above 500. Similarly, the Bullets have found wins hard to come by of late with only three wins from their past 10 games. However, they were able to find a win last outing against the Phoenix, defeating them by 12 points at home. Neither side would be at all happy with their recent form, although the Kings do have the greater upside and should be able to account for the Bullets in Sydney. With that said, there are far better betting games on this weekend, so I’ll be playing just one unit on the Kings to cover the spread.
