Melbourne Renegades vs Hobart Hurricanes
Marvel Stadium, Thursday 4th January, 7:15pm AEDT
Melbourne Renegades
Predicted XI: Quinton de Kock, Jordan Cox, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Shaun Marsh, Jonathan Wells, Mackenzie Harvey, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Peter Siddle
The Renegades have had a horror run of luck with their international imports, Joe Clarke’s quad injury has now officially ruled him out for the remainder of BBL13. While the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s decision to withdraw Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s NOC, means it’s likely the Renegades won’t have the star spinner for the remainder of the season as well. It couldn’t come at a worse time for the Renegades who’s season looks all but over after an eight wicket defeat in the Melbourne Derby on Tuesday.
The Renegades batting unit failed to fire with opener Quinton de Kock (23) the only player to pass 20, as the Renegades were held to 7/97 from their fourteen overs, which was no task for the Stars to chase down. The Renegades batting unit has underperformed all season long with totals of 7/167, 8/162, 5/183, 8/149 and 7/97 (14 overs) from their five losses in their six completed games. To highlight the Renegades struggles with the bat, Shaun Marsh is the Renegades second highest run scorer despite only playing three games.
The Renegades bowling attack hasn’t fared much better, conceding 962 runs from their 102 overs, an average economy rate of 9.4 runs. The only Renegades bowler who has conceded under eight runs an over is Mujeeb, who won’t be suiting up for the Renegades on Thursday night. Veterans Adam Zampa (4 wickets at an average of 48.75) and Kane Richardson (4 wickets at 38.25) have been well out of form.
Hobart Hurricanes
Predicted XI: Caleb Jewell, Matthew Wade, Mac Wright, Ben McDermott, Corey Anderson, Tim David, Nikhil Chaudhary, Chris Jordan, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith
The key watch for the Hurricanes from a selection standpoint will be the health of Matthew Wade, with coach Jeff Vaughan describing the veteran’s status as ‘day by day’ as he deals with back spasms and soreness. Vaughan stated the Hurricanes will give Wade every chance to play, and the two day break in between games should help Wade.
The Hurricanes have kept themselves amongst the finals race, jumping into fifth place on the BBL table at the time of writing thanks to a convincing win over the Thunder on New Year’s Day. Ben McDermott scored an unbeaten 53 off 34 deliveries in his first game back from concussion, while Mac Wright (34 off 25) and Caleb Jewell (31 off 20) continued their solid seasons.
The win was set up by an excellent performance from the Hurricanes bowling attack that restricted the Thunder to 7/150. After a poor start to the season, the Englishman produced a man of the match performance with 2/20 from his four overs. If the Hurricanes can perform with the ball in the manner they did on New Year’s Day, the Canes are a genuine chance to play finals.
Match Prediction
With the unavailability of two of their three first choice overseas players, the Renegades have been stripped of their star power which has destroyed their depth. The Renegades lack of batting depth was on show even when they had their full side available in their game against the Hurricanes on the 23rd of December. After being 0/78 in the seventh over, the Renegades lost 3/0 in the following four balls and failed to recover, reaching just 5/185, which the Canes chased down easily.
The Canes have a good record against the Renegades of late, winning four of their last five games against the men in red. Playing at Marvel Stadium hasn’t been an issue either for the Hurricanes, having won three of their last four games against the Renegades at the venue. The Hurricanes will be too strong for a struggling Renegades outfit.

Shaun Marsh 15+ Runs: The veteran has had an excellent start to his final Big Bash season, with the classy left hander scoring 117 runs at 39 from his three games this season. Marsh scored 54 in his last game at Marvel Stadium, and will be looking to produce another big knock if the Renegades are any chance of winning.
Ben McDermott 20+ Runs: McDermott returned from a two game absence with an excellent 53 not out, and will be full of confidence coming up against a side he has absolutely dominated over his career. McDermott has scored 574 runs against the Renegades, the most of any player in games between the Hurricanes and the Renegades. Those 574 runs have come at an average of 82, and a strike rate of 155, with two centuries.
Nathan Ellis To Take a Wicket: The Hurricanes skipper turned the game when these two sides last met, taking 2/32 after the Renegades hot start. Ellis has taken a wicket in four of his five games this season, and will be a handful for the out of form Renegades batting group.
