BBL12 Sixers vs Renegades Preview & Betting Tips
SCG, Wednesday 28th December, 7:15pm (AEDT)
Sydney Sixers
Predicted XI: Josh Philippe, Kurtis Patterson, James Vince, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, Dan Christian, Hayden Kerr, Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird, Izharulhaq Naveed, Todd Murphy
Stephen O’Keefe managed to get through his four overs on Monday evening taking a remarkable 1/16, given he appeared to pick up a hamstring injury after his first over. O’Keefe’s injury will pave the way for the young spin duo of Todd Murphy and Izharulhaq Naveed to work in tandem.
The Sixers put together a professional performance that we’ve come to expect from the franchise over the years, in a seven wicket win over the Stars on Boxing Day. Skipper Moises Henriques bounced back after consecutive ducks, hitting a match winning 52 not out to see the Sixers home. After starting the season 0-2, the Sixers have picked up back to back wins, and will be looking to entrench themselves inside the top five.
The Sixers batting has come to the party in their last two games, with Josh Philippe, Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk and James Vince getting amongst the runs. It’s a scary sight for the rest of the competition with the Sixers beginning to hit form, with their next four games against the Renegades and Heat, the Sixers have a golden opportunity to catapult themselves up the ladder.
Melbourne Renegades
Predicted XI: Nic Maddinson, Martin Guptill, Shaun Marsh, Aaron Finch, Jonathan Wells, Sam Harper, Akeal Hosein, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, David Moody
It’s going to be an interesting game for the Renegades at the selection table, with a number of moving pieces. Andre Russell’s four game stint with the Renegades has ended, with New Zealander Martin Guptill to replace him. With Shaun Marsh expected to be fit to play, Jake Fraser McGurk and Sam Harper’s places in the side are under serious pressure from Marsh and Peter Handscomb, given Harper’s lack of experience batting in the middle order. Another tough selection point looms in the Renegades bowling attack, with David Moody taking 3/16 after he came into the side for Kane Richardson who was managed for the Christmas Eve clash.
After starting the season 3-0 with wins against the lowly Heat and Thunder, the Renegades copped a serious reality check after being bundled out for 114 in an eight run loss to the Hurricanes on Christmas Eve. The Renegades batting unit has vastly improved on previous seasons, however they are still vulnerable to collapses as they’ve shown in every game they’ve played this season.
As it has been for the majority of the season, the Renegades bowling attack was outstanding on Christmas Eve against the Hurricanes. David Moody (3/16), Akeal Hosein (3/29) and Tom Rogers (1/17) bowled out the Hurricanes for 122 in what should have been a winning performance. Hosein ranks second in the BBL for wickets this season with 10 wickets at an average of 9.20, while Rogers is ranked 5th with 8 wickets at 14.25.
Match Prediction
The Sixers are beginning to hit their stride, and they’ll be full of confidence coming up against a Renegades outfit they’ve dominated over the past few seasons. The Sixers have won five in a row against the Renegades, and have bowled the Renegades out in two of their last three meetings.
The Sixers play the conditions at the SCG incredibly well with the versatility they possess with both bat and ball. Josh Philippe, Moises Henriques and Jordan Silk have put up big runs against the Renegades in the past few seasons, and are beginning to hit form after a slow start to the season. Saturday’s clash showed the Renegades still have a way to go against the top sides in the competition, and the Sixers will be too good at home.

Same Game Multi
As highlighted earlier, the Sixers batsmen have toyed with the Renegades over the past three years, so there will be a big Sixers flavour for the same game multi. To kick off the multi, we’ve got Josh Philippe to score 15+ runs. In eight games against the Renegades, Philippe has scored 329 runs at an average of 41, and has only scored under 20 against the Renegades with scores of 0, 48, 95, 61, 33, 52, 20 and 20.
For the second leg, we’re once again backing the Sixers skipper to score 15+ runs. Henriques delivered in spades on Boxing Day with 52*, and has scored 326 runs at an average of 29 against the Renegades.
To round out the multi, we’re taking Sean Abbott to take a wicket. Abbott has taken at least one wicket in his last five games against the Renegades, and our BBL Data Tools show that Abbot has taken seven wickets from the first four games of the season.
