Super Rugby Round 8 Betting Tips
Hurricanes vs Sharks (Friday, Apr 6 5:35pm AEST)
Round 8 starts in New Zealand as the in-form Hurricanes host the Sharks at McLean Park. The Hurricanes made the Rebels look very average last week as they cruised to a 50-19 victory. They’ve won four straight matches and will be looking to continue their winning ways on Friday. The Sharks responded after two straight losses with an impressive 63-40 win over the Blues in NZ. But they’re overwhelming underdogs in this contest. They were beaten 41-0 in the last meeting against the Hurricanes, which was also at this venue. The concern for the Sharks is their defence which allows 30 points per match. They now face the Hurricanes who average 32.2 points scored this season. They also own the best defence in Super Rugby. So it’s likely going to be another large win for the Hurricanes.
TIP: Hurricanes -21.5 - $1.91 at CrownBet
Sunwolves vs Waratahs (Saturday, Apr 7 3:15pm AEST)
The Sunwolves are back from the bye and at home this week, but they’ll face the in-form Waratahs. They’re coming off two straight wins over the Brumbies and Rebels. Which are two teams the Sunwolves have already lost to this season. Before the bye, they got smashed by the Chiefs 61-10. So the Waratahs should take advantage in attack. They scored 51 against the Rebels a few weeks ago and rank inside the top 5 for points scored this season. In contrast, the Sunwolves are the worst defensive side as they allow 44 points against. The Waratahs beat them 57-12 at this venue in 2016 so I’ll back them to beat the line.
TIP: Waratahs -14.5 - $1.91 at Ladbrokes
Chiefs vs Blues (Saturday, Apr 7 5:35pm AEST)
The Chiefs and Blues meet once again this season. The Chiefs won the first matchup 27-21 and have won three in a row since that victory. Last week, they overcame the Highlanders 27-22 and beat the Sunwolves 61-10 previously. On the other hand, the Blues are 1-4 in their last 5 matches. They conceded 63 points against the Sharks at home last week, which was disappointing. So it’s hard to see them getting within 8.5 points. They have a 5-7 ATS record versus the Chiefs. Since last season, the Chiefs are 9-1 at home. To top if off, they rank 1st in Super Rugby for points scored and face the Blues defence that allows 40.6 points per match.
TIP: Chiefs -8.5 - $1.91 at Ladbrokes
Brumbies vs Reds (Saturday, Apr 7 7:45pm AEST)
Saturday night Super Rugby action is a crucial matchup between the Brumbies and Reds in Canberra. ACT is coming off a close loss against the Waratahs at home last week. Their season is now on the line as they face the refreshed Reds. QLD are coming off the bye and they hold a 3-2 record so far. They should be confident of victory after beating the Brumbies 18-10 in the earlier meeting this season. The Reds have the second best defence in Super Rugby and they face the Brumbies who score just 18 points per match. QLD has won the last two against them but ACT is 4-1 at home in this matchup. But I see good value for the Reds at the line. Both sides average under 20 points scored and which means this match should be a close finish. I’d also get on the under total points when it’s available.
TIP: Reds +4.5 - $1.90 at Sportsbet
Lions vs Stormers (Sunday, Apr 8 1:15am AEST)
The Lions are back at home this week and they’ll be looking to rebound after a 1-3 record in their last 4 games. They lost in a close contest against the Crusaders last week 14-8. But the pleasing sign was the defence which had allowed 35+ points in their previous 4 matches. For the Stormers, they also lost last week as they went down 33-23 against the Bulls. They haven’t won an away match in 4 attempts this season so it’s going to be another tough contest against the Lions. They lost the last meeting 29-16 as well. I’m backing the Lions to win and there’s good value for the Lions 1-12. Both sides average over 29 points allowed per match and I’m predicting the Lions will just have enough points in them.
TIP: Lions 1-12 - $2.60 at CrownBet
Jaguares vs Crusaders (Sunday, Apr 8 7:40am AEST)
The last match of the round is an interesting matchup between the Crusaders and Jaguares in Argentina. The Crusaders have never played at the venue against the Jaguares and the Argentinian side is coming off an impressive win over the Lions 49-35. They also come off the bye and will be fresh for this Crusaders side. The Crusaders beat the Lions last match 14-8 in the Final rematch from 2017. Their defence has been great in their last two wins, so that will be the key in this matchup. In those two wins, they’ve allowed just 20 total points. The only meeting between the sides was a 32-15 result for the Crusaders at home. But the Jaguares have beaten the Lions and Waratahs at home previously. So the line is 14.5 points is achievable. This is their 5th straight home match and the travel factor could impact the Crusaders in the latter stages of this contest.
TIP: Jaguares +15.5 - $1.91 at Ladbrokes
