AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood
Friday 7:50pm AEST, July 7th, Marvel Stadium
The Western Bulldogs’ recent winning form will be put to the test on Friday night in Round 17 when they take on Collingwood at Marvel Stadium. It will be the first meeting between these clubs in nearly 14 months and it’s expected to be a cracker.
The Bulldogs enter this blockbuster fixture riding a two-game win streak after claiming victories against North Melbourne and Fremantle in the past fortnight. It’s been an important return to winning ways for the club after finding themselves on a three-game skid at the end of Round 13.
Due to improved form coupled with teams above them struggling, the Dogs now have an opportunity to jump into the top four with a win on Friday night. As it stands, they sit in sixth spot on the ladder and are only percentage behind the Demons who currently occupy fourth position.
In injury news for the Dogs, Ed Richards returns to the line-up after a lengthy stint on the sidelines. Richards is having a career-best season and brings vital run and dash off the halfback line. Mitch Hannan loses his spot due to injury, joining important players Jason Johannisen and Liam Jones in the stands.
Collingwood have barely put a foot wrong in 2023 and have been glued to the top of the ladder for a number of months as a result. They absolutely dominated the Suns last weekend in a road game that many expected to be close. That win made it two in a row for the Magpies after losing by four points to the Demons on King’s Birthday.
On a sour note, the Pies will be without the versatile Brayden Maynard as well as key forward Brody Mihocek this weekend, both men suffered minor injuries in their recent win against the Suns. However, Jordan De Goey comes in for his first game since copping a suspension against the Eagles four games ago.
The red-hot Magpies seldom start as underdogs and are currently listed as 10.5-point favourites against the Bulldogs on Friday night. And while the Magpies have made a habit of winning matches by narrow margins over the past two seaosns, I believe the spread should be at least 1-2 goals higher.
Collingwood were simply sublime against the Suns last weekend and if they’re in a similar mood against this weekend, I simply can’t see the Bulldogs staying with them.

Nick Daicos 30+ Disposals – Averaging over 33 touches a game this season and has had 36 and 37 in his last two. He should have no problem racking them up against a Bulldogs side that doesn’t tag.
Josh Daicos 25+ Disposals – I’m expecting a high possession game under the roof on Friday night. Josh Daicos is averaging over 25 a game this year and has had 33 and 27 in his past two.
Mason Cox 1+ Goals – I don’t rate this Bulldogs defence very highly at all, especially their key position defenders. Mason Cox has kicked at least one goal in each of his last seven matches and I expect that streak to be extended.
