Race 1:
Hopefully we got a few winners on the first day to give us a bank for one I like to start Day Two. Scarface Romeo is an Ex-Weir runner that hasn’t been seen for 39 weeks where he was narrowly beaten out of a place at a Donald maiden. He showed ability in that first prep, now with the Maher/Eustace stable, these Weir transfers have shown that they usually race as good if not better with the new trainer. Importantly, Scarface Romeo has been gelded since the forced change of stable and gets the blinkers added for the first time. He was seen at an official trial at Cranbourne a week ago, jumped well, sat in behind the leaders and was only asked for an effort late. He responded, and travelled well through the line. The three horses that beat him home in that trial have all previously won a race or races, I expect him to be very well backed on the day in the 15 minutes leading up until the race.
Race 6: Galleywood Hurdle 3200m
Fascinating race. Self Sense gets the blinkers off at his return to jumps racing. He ran on well to win the Yarra Valley Cup four starts ago, backed up at double figure odds less than a week later to win the Mornington Cup beating some very handy stayers in the process. He then went to Sydney and battled on ok at Group Two level before coming back to Victoria and was poor on Anzac Day. That was no doubt not him at his best, he will be ready to go for this and his win in the Kevin Lafferty Hurdle here at the back end of last Winter was with authority. His style when over the obstacles was out and running, therein lies the problem. The Waterhouse/Bott team have produced an exciting jumper in the making. Goodwood Zodiac made his jumping debut at Pakenham in a maiden hurdle a couple of weeks ago. He was very well backed, ran to a huge lead early in the race and the chasers probably couldn’t see him mid-race he was that far in front. He kept going at the back-end to officially win by 30 lengths, this is obviously a different league but he jumped so well and looks a natural. If that bold front running technique is adapted again, Self Sense will have to chase very hard as opposed to making the pace.
Race 7: BM70 Handicap 1000m
Parsifal is a dual acceptor, he has the option to go to a BM78 here tomorrow on the last day of the carnival, if he does come here he looks awfully hard to beat. He has been very consistent over his 9-start career, he resumed across the border at Morphetville on the inner track with a dominant win after getting a nice three-wide cart into it. The runner-up in that race has since bolted in on Saturday and the fourth horse has won at Oakbank over the Easter carnival in a BM75. The form from that race has held up well, the money is only slightly better in Thursday’s race but hopefully he comes here. A little worrying that he has not placed at both of his rain-affected starts, hopefully the track is playing fair and the draw looks ok. He has versatility, second-up last campaign he went down narrowly to Ringerdingding who has gone on to bigger and better things. Girls Got Spirit will be big odds and looks a good saver option, but have her as a chop-out only.
Save: Girls Got Spirit $7.50
Race 9: BM64 Handicap 1700m
I like this race as a betting proposition as I want to take on the early favourite in betting, Arty Lucas. He has a few negatives to point out, the wide draw may or may not be one of them depending on how the track is playing. He is yet to win out of maiden grade and will be giving them a start, all negatives in a race with a big field where he will need everything to go right. I would be happy to take 3 or 4 in the race around him and even wider in the Quaddie. Timor Gold will shoot forward early form the wide draw and try to lead all the way. Hostar is locally trained, will get back and look for inside runs. Obscura has been good at his last couple and gets Maskiell back on and Saint Peter was very impressive winnning his maiden last time.
Suggested Bet: Back 2,3,5 and 9
