AFL Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney vs Geelong
Friday 7:50pm AEST, June 30th, SCG
Arguably the match of the round will be on Friday night at the SCG, with Sydney playing hosts to Geelong in a Grand Final rematch. Both sides got back onto the winners list last weekend and will be desperate to build some momentum as we head into the final stretch of the home and away season.
Sydney enter this clash with a 6-8 record which surprisingly only has them four points outside the top eight. They recorded a monster 171-point win over West Coast last weekend, although that result probably says more about the current state of the Eagles than it does themselves.
There’s some new found optimism at the Swans who have now won three of their last five matches. They’ve started to get some of their important players back from injury with the likes of Callum Mills, Dane Rampe, and even Joel Amartey returning over the last fortnight.
Similarly, the Cats are starting to get closer to full strength and will likely welcome back Patrick Dangerfield for Friday night’s clash after the gun midfielder missed due to injury last weekend, although they’ll unfortunately lose superstar forward Jeremy Cameron due to concussion protocols.
Geelong will head to Sydney with an even 7-7 record to their name, with only percentage keeping them out of the top eight. They probably played their best game of the season last weekend against the Demons who they ran over the top of in the fourth quarter to win by 15 points.
And although their recent win over the highly fancied Demons will help build some confidence and momentum, the Cats will be well aware that their form away from GMHBA Stadium this season has left a lot to be desired. They’ve won only three of their eight away fixtures this campaign, and they’ve given up over 70 points on every occasion.
Form a betting perspective, matches don’t come much tougher than this in my opinion, however, with home ground advantage on their side and in a must-win game, I’m happy to have a small play on the Swans in to get the job done.
