Match Preview
The Saints will welcome the return to Marvel Stadium after a tough road trip to Adelaide in Round 1, which saw them go down to the Crows by 63 points. The Saints have historically been poor when travelling to Adelaide, but they were up against it last week, with nine of their best 23 out with injury.
One of those players, Mitch Owens, will return to the line-up this week and should add a much-needed target up forward. However, the Saints are still without Dan Butler, Paddy Dow, Liam Henry, Dougal Howard, Max King, Mattaes Philippou and Cooper Sharman.
On the contrary, the Cats started their season in hot form down in Geelong, smashing the Dockers by 78 points to get their campaign underway. Star recruit Bailey Smith was best on ground in the win, racking up a game high 32 disposals and kicking a goal.
The Cats will go into their Round 2 clash with a completely unchanged side to the one that downed the Dockers, and are pretty close to full strength at the moment. They do have 10+ players on their injury list, but it’s likely that Cam Guthrie is the only one of those to be a walk-up starter in their best 23.
The Saints must find a way to contain Geelong’s firepower after struggling defensively last week. If the Cats can replicate their Round 1 efficiency, they will be tough to stop. The midfield battle also looks to be pretty one sided. With key players out, the Saints look one-paced through the midfield with the likes of Macrae, Steele and Hunter Clark all lacking leg speed.
St Kilda has won their last three matchups against Geelong at Marvel Stadium, which could provide confidence. However, based on current form, Geelong’s firepower and midfield dominance give them the edge. Expect the Cats to win this one comfortably.

Geelong H2H - Even if the Saints manage to scrape a cover in this game due to their tendency to play a little above themselves at Marvel, I can’t see them winning outright. They have too many injuries at the moment and they do not match up well against the pace in this Geelong midfield.
Oliver Henry 2+ Goals - The Saints are seriously lacking key defenders at the moment, as displayed last week when both Darcy Fogarty and Elliot Himmelberg got off the chain at times for the Crows. Callum Wilkie usually does a pretty solid job on Jeremy Cameron, so he will get that matchup again. Ollie Henry should benefit from this. Kicked 3 last week.
Max Holmes 25+ Possessions - These type of midfielders that can also roll back and pick up the cheaper possessions off the HBF usually have field days against St Kilda. Holmes had 24 last week against the Dockers and had two solid games against the Saints last season.
SGM Odds: $2.90 at BoomBet
