Sandown’s Hillside circuit is racing on Wednesday after 50mls of rain fell on the track in the 72 hours leading up to the meeting. It's a tricky meeting to assess but we have gone with some horses that like rain affected ground. Nott there may be a few scratching’s come race morning so monitor the latest racing information. The track is rated a Soft 6 at 5pm on Monday night but a further downgrade may occur.
My three best bets of the card are below and being slightly ahead in the first week of the year, we hope that pattern continues throughout 2024! Also, be sure to head over to our Racing Tips page for more best bets from around the country this Wednesday.
Sandown Racing Tips: Wednesday, January 10th 2023
Race 3: Sportsbet Bet With Mates Handicap - 4:50pm (AEDT)
(1) Berry Bubbly drops in class here and did run quite well at The Valley when 4th last start but only neaten 1L. She led on that occasion and got caught over the final 100m. She is 100 percent fit now and she should be able to run it out this time with Carleen Hefel on top who has a good record on this mare. From barrier 7 she may lead again but an each-way play is probably the go in case she doesn’t get to the front.
(3) Arctic Fury likes this distance but probably doesn’t want any rain on race day itself. She will get back in the run and if the pace is on she can run home well in this one. Damien Lane is on and he has run a 1st and 2nd on the Fury in his 2 races.
(6) Cute As is first up but did win a Seymour jumpout quite well on January 4. She has won on both the Good and the Soft and she was only 4.5L off the classy Benedetta on September 2 at Caulfield. This is a lot easier.
(1) Berry Bubbly E/W
$6/$1.95 (1 Unit)
Race 7: Sportsbet Make It Look Easy Handicap - 7pm (AEDT)
(13) Star Vega has a wide barrier to contend with (12) but if the track is rated Soft, he is a big chance in this with just 55.5kg to carry. The light weight will give him a chance to run on well which is his usual race pattern and Luke Currie sticks with him after his Flemington 9th which is a good sign. On December 15 he was 2nd behind Zamborghini and he is 100 percent fit now after 4 runs in from a spell. He hasn’t won in 9 months but is worth an each-way play here.
(12) Lavish Thinker will want the rain to stay and Zac Spain knows the horse very well and will look to position him midfield. He ran home well for 4th at Caulfield last start and was only beaten half a length.
(9) Moveforlex comes into this race fresh and he does normally run well that way. He is the likely fav and the Patrick Payne and Billy Egan combination are in fine form. He will likely settle on pace and will like a Good track even more.
(13) Star Vega E/W
$8/$2.50 (1 Unit)
Race 8: Sportsbet Jockey Watch Handicap - 7:30pm (AEDT)
(1) Lang Park can carry a big weight and will have to do so again in this handicap. Payne and Egan combine again after the Flying Artie gelding ran a gallant 2nd a month ago when going down by a head. He has been freshened up since and a Soft track is probably best for this one. He won over this distance at Cranbourne on September 21 and he led all of the way after being backed into even money on that occasion. Market support may be a good guide here.
(3) Walter Spur will want a wet track and if it is Heavy he comes into play. He gets a good barrier here (3) and will likely settle in 3rd or 4th position in the run. On December 27 at Geelong he was working his way into the race nicely when 3rd over 1147m and the extra 150m looks ideal.
(5) Shambo has a wide barrier in 13 but comes into play if the track is rain affected. He won at Mornington on the Soft on December 1 and then placed (3rd) on the Good at Seymour last start. Luke Nolen won on him with his only ride on him and is on again.
(1) Lang Park
