Racing heads to Sandown Hillside and there are three stakes races on the card in the form of the VRC St Leger, Anzac Day Stakes and Thoroughbred Club Anniversary. I’ll provide my tips on those races as well as a Quaddie and my best bet and best value bets of the day. Good luck!
Sandown Racing Tips – Saturday, April 29th 2023
Best Bet – Race 8 # 1 Midnight Glow (see race preview below)
Value – Race 6 # 9 South of Houston
Race 5 – Listed ANZAC Day Stakes (1400m)
(8) Vivy Air - Soft winner last start with the runner up a handy type as well. Maps for a lovely run and even though this is a step up in grade, she’s a promising filly.
(4) Arizona Activist – Tackled a stronger race last start and I thought he acquitted himself well, working home nicely. He’s going to relish the rise to 1400m.
(3) Mistavain – Jumped out well prior to debuting in The Showdown where he boxed on well. Fitter for the run and with luck from the wide draw, he’s in with a winning chance.
(8) Vivy Air – Win
$5.50 (2 Units)
Race 8 – Listed VRC St Leger (3000m)
(1) Midnight Glow (BEST BET) – Untested at the trip but he boasts the right formlines to deserve favouritism. He wasn’t far off Dunkel in a pair of races earlier in the prep and more recently, ran well when a narrow second in a key lead-up race, the Galilee Final. Off that, he’s likely to handle this longer trip.
(5) Roaring Engine – Blinkers go on for this and I think he’s going to really relish stepping out to 3000m. He’s going to have to improve a bit though to turn the tables on Midnight Glow.
(12) Winning Bid – Still a maiden is this daughter of Fastnet Rock, but she’s ticking over nicely this prep and is bursting to win a race. She’s hard fit and will settle in a forward position.
(1) Midnight Glow – Win
$2.75 (5 Units)
Race 9 – Listed Thoroughbred Club Anniversary (1400m)
(3) Crosshaven – The honest Smart Missile gelding went down by the narrowest of margins at Bendigo last start. It was a game effort, as the winner was carrying 5.5kg less. Stays at 1400m and his recent form reads well for a race like this.
(1) Cardinal Gem – He couldn’t have been much more impressive winning a Group 3 last start. This is an easier race but he goes up from 54kg to 60kg for this.
(6) Lady of Honour – Fitter for two runs back from a spell, both have been in black type races. She was third behind Cardinal Gem last start and now gets a 3.5kg weight swing in her favour on that horse. Thrives over 1400m – yet to miss the top three in five starts.
(3) Crosshaven – Win
$11.20 (1 Unit)
