SANDOWN HILLSIDE TIPS
RACE 3
Was keen on (6) Won Ball at Bendigo last week before that race meeting was abandoned and happy to butter up again on the Weir horse today. He won his first two starts before being narrowly defeated as the short-priced favourite in Adelaide last time we saw him. He’s since been spelled and returns here as a gelding. Drawn well with a handy claim for Ethan Brown and should go very close. (1) Parwan Prince is flying and shouldn’t be underestimated in this grade.
RACE 4
Another one that I was keen on last week at Bendigo is (6) Mirimar. This is a pretty deep race but he looks well suited once again. Last start he stepped up from 1800m to 2400m and was beaten 0.4L at this track and distance. Today he has the benefit of having that 2400m run under his belt, which should aim him fitness-wise. Drawn well and he will appreciate conditions if the track remains in the soft range. Looks a good each way bet at the $6.00 quote.
RACE 5
Two that caught my eye when I first assessed the race. (9) The Passage struggles to get his nose in front but he really does find a very winnable race here. He’s been around the mark all preparation and drops back from BM78 to BM70 grade today. Mark Zahra takes over the ride and the horse also steps up to 1800m for the first time in his career. Should get his chance from barrier 5 and if he can’t win today he will be unbackable for the rest of his career. (6) Eckhart represents the very sneaky Patrick Payne stable, who should never be underestimated. This horse won two in a row before a fairly luckless run last time out over 2000m at Cranbourne. Back to 1800m today and Michael Dee actually jumps off The Passage to ride him. Could be the value at $7.00.
Value: (6) Eckhart $7.00 Sportsbet
RACE 9
The whole of Australia might be on (8) See Me Exceed here. She ran well first up when (6) Lady Of Flanders got the better of her over 1200m at Caulfield. She should be better for that run and gets a 4.5kg weight swing on Lady Of Flanders today. She’s up to much better races than this and will likely be anchoring plenty of quaddies.
CANTERBURY TIPS
RACE 7
Have to wait until the end of the day at Canterbury for our only bets there but very little stood out as a decent bet up until this race. There’s two that caught my eye and both are at backable odds. (5) Bull Market returned as a gelding at Warwick Farm first up and ran a terrific race to be beaten a nose on the line under 59.5kg. He drops to 56kg here with Kerrin McEvoy retaining the ride and he does have a 1400m win at Rosehill to his name so he looks well and truly up to winning this. The horse that creates plenty of interest is the Waller/Bowman runner (6) Mr Haussman. He was absolutely horrendous as the odds-on favourite over 1600m last start but he’s had five weeks between runs and drops back to 1250m here. When Waller drops them back in trip it’s always worth taking note of. Bowman jumps off the short-priced Waller favourite (11) Star Of The Seas to keep the ride on Mr Haussman which certainly raises eyebrows. That could be a weight issue because he might struggle to ride 55kg but Jay Ford picking up the ride doesn’t necessarily suggest it’s across the line.
Value: (6) Mr Haussman $10 BetEasy
BELMONT TIPS
RACE 5
(3) Kia Ora Star was very ordinary as the well-backed favourite last start but that may have been a case of second-up-syndrome after a dominant first up win. Willing to forgive that run and give him another chance here because he’s a horse I’ve had a decent opinion of and the booking of Pike suggests he may not be completely cooked.
RACE 7
I’d be very keen on (4) King Blitz here with a different jockey booking but it’s hard to argue with what the horse has shown from its first two starts and the jockey did steer it to victory last start. The horse was good on debut over 1000m when beaten a length and backed that up with a solid win over 1300m last start. Up to 1400m now, drawn well in barrier 6 and should be very competitive once again. (1) Supreme Force comes out of a strong form race last start and can win again.
