2024 NRL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney Roosters vs Wests Tigers
Allianz Stadium, Sunday 30th June, 6:15pm (AEST)
Last Week
The Roosters are coming off a solid 26-8 victory over the Bulldogs last week, marking their third win in four weeks. The Roosters were dominant over a very good Bulldogs team, all whilst missing several Origin stars. Despite a few slipups throughout the season, the Roosters are starting to hit their straps, having finally got themselves into the top 4. A win here will put them on the same number of wins as the Sharks and Panthers, if the Panthers lose this week.
As for the Tigers, they are in their best form of the season, after consecutive wins over the Titans in round 15, and Raiders last week. It has been quite the turnaround, after being absolutely destroyed by the Dragons three weeks ago, 56-14. Last week, they got big contributions from Lachlan Galvin (2 tries, 1 line-break, 1 try assist), Adam Doueihi (1 try, 2 line-breaks, 1 try assist), and Api Koroisau (1 try, 2 try assists, 1 line-break assist). Coach Benji Marshall will be looking for some big contributions from these three again this week.
Match Preview
These teams last met in round 26 last season, with the Roosters destroying the Tigers 32-8 after closing 14.5-point favourites, easily covering. The total closed 45.5 and didn’t stand much of a chance with the Tigers failing to score in the final 58 minutes of the contest. Remarkably, this was a better effort from the Tigers from the game in 2022 against the Roosters, with the chooks winning 72-6 at the SCG.
As for this week, the Roosters opened massive 16.5-point favourites before last weekend’s results, before re-opening at the same number. Tigers money has flooded the market though, as the Roosters now sit as just 12.5-point favourites. I can only presume this is down to the likelihood of the Roosters resting Origin stars Angus Chrichton and Lindsay Collins, as 12.5 is a ludicrous number otherwise. Prior to last weekend’s results, I would have made this spread over 20 points, so if the Roosters are at full strength, then 12.5 should be attacked. Even without Collins and Crichton, the Roosters have the depth in the forwards to cover, and I like them to win by 13+.
As for the total, it opened a massive 52.5, and it seems no one is game enough to take the unders. I have a fair total as 48.5, so see value in the under, with the Tigers being a heavy unders team (79%), whilst the Roosters are close to 50/50. I’ll steer clear though, with the Roosters able to put this total up by themselves if they get going.

Same Game Multi
D Young (1+ try) – The Tigers’ edges are horrible, and I can’t see them stopping Dom Young from scoring his 11th try of the season.
D Tupou (1+ try) – As above, any shift to the left for the Chooks should give the Giraffe a chance at a four pointer.
S Leniu (1+ try) – The former Panthers has shown in two Origin games that he is built for that arena, the bench prop will come into this game high in confidence and wanting a meat pie.
SGM Odds: $12.58 at Neds
