2024 NRL Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers
Allianz Stadium – Thursday 28th March – 8pm (AEST)
Match preview
The Roosters came up against their rivals, the Rabbitohs, last week and delivered a crushing victory. Momentum was on their side from the opening exchanges; there was a clear difference, and the Roosters were ready for the match. They built on an 18-nil HT lead and eventually prevailed 48-6. This was no surprise given the areas they dominated. They completed at 86%, ran for more total metres, had more post contact metres and had 7 line breaks. They worked harder for the result than the score line suggests.
The Panthers were also victorious in a similar manner, accounting for the Broncos 34-12 in front of their home fans. They controlled all areas of the first half, with the match all but finished as they led 22-2 at HT. Such was their ascendency it wasn’t until the 55th minute that the Broncos crossed for their first try. It’s no surprise that they completed at 87%, made almost 400m more and 700 total post contact metres. There is little to suggest that they won’t be yet another strong for in season 2024.
Match prediction
The complexion of this match has been dramatically impacted by the players available for both sides. Just when it looked like the Roosters would be on the negative side of that, news broke that Nathan Cleary would miss this match. His place at halfback has been taken by Brad Schneider. The Roosters have recovered well, with both Keary and Walker available. The other key omissions are in the forwards with Collins (Roosters) and Sorensen (Panthers) out.
This has seen the Roosters listed as favourites ($1.58 vs $2.40) for this match; on paper, they are the stronger team and are deserving of this tag. The fact that they are playing at home and have performed well to date only enhances their cause. This game will be closer than anticipated though.
The Panthers have a great ability to drag their opponents into an arm wrestle and will place extra pressure on the attack of the Roosters. As good as they have been, they have also benefitted from facing opponents at the right time. When challenged by Manly, they were caught short. The quality of their opponent this week will be far better than Round 3. This means that a close match should be expected.
Even if the Panthers tend to struggle at this ground (64% vs 45%), they have won the past 8 matches against the Roosters (by an average of 15.6 points). This game will take a different course, but you cannot rule out the visitors just because Cleary is absent. His impact in the opening weeks of the competition has been unbelievable but it is also time for others to stand up and take control of this talented team.

Edwards and To’o have a strong recent record against the Roosters, scoring multiple tries in their past 3 games. Their form to start the year has been positive and they are two players who will need to stand up in Cleary’s absence. Young will be an ariel threat against wingers he is larger than. Expect the Roosters to exploit this as much as possible.
