Welcome to our preview and horse racing betting tips for the best betting races at Randwick, Sandown Lakeside and Ascot on Wednesday, February 7th.
We’ve taken a look at all three cards and selected the races we’re keenest to bet into, and you can find our tips and comments on each of those below.
RANDWICK RACING TIPS
RACE 4
Willing to give (7) Moccasin Miss a chance to turn the tables on (2) Akasaki here. We had Akasaki as our best bet of the day when he won by 4L last start, but Moccasin Miss was a hard luck story in behind, only getting clear at the 100m mark to motor home into 3rd. The margin should have been far smaller than what it was, and with a 2.5kg weight swing today, Moccasin Miss can give this a good shake at $4.40. (1) Invincible Quest has claims with two wins from three starts first up, as well as two from three at the distance and five from seven on good ground.
TIP: (7) Moccasin Miss
RACE 5
Tricky sort of race but there’s two that stand out to me. I’m with (8) Midnight Delight each way at $6.50. She’s third up from a spell here and gets a big jockey change with Kerrin McEvoy taking over from Glyn Schofield. She led and went way too hard in front last start so I’d be inclined to forgive her for that, and if McEvoy can get a more comfortable lead from barrier 1 she could be hard to run down. (6) Stella Victoria finally broke through last start after a string of placings, and with that win under her belt she could go on with it here, so I’ll be saving on her at $3.50.
TIP: (8) Midnight Delight EW
RACE 6
Wide open race and generally these 2400m races don’t excite me, but there’s two at longer odds I’m interested in backing. (2) Go Benny hasn’t done much in three starts back from a spell, but he never does. From 12 when either first, second or third up from a spell, he’s only ever placed twice, but from three starts when fourth up from a spell, he’s had a win, a 2nd and a 4th. All his wins have come at his fourth start or later in a campaign, so he should be peaking for today’s race. He’s trialled well since his last run too, and he’s got a strong rider on board in Tye Angland. At $17 he’s certainly not the worst. (4) Napolean is third up from a spell, which is when he des his best racing. He’s had 12 starts when either first or second up and has never won, but he’s got two wins from five starts when third up. Ran really well first up before a fair run last start, expecting a sharp bounce-back here and he draws well and gets a nice claim for Rachel King. Something on at the $16.
TIP: (2) Go Benny EW / (4) Napolean EW
SANDOWN RACING TIPS
RACE 1
Following my money here and sticking with (5) Over And Above, who comes off a solid debut run when only narrowly beaten by Summer Sham, and I said immediately after that race that I thought the first two across the line were smart. They cleared out by 3L from the third horse, and I think the key today is the fact Over And Above is likely to lead. The last time we raced on this track, it was horribly leader biased, so it could be very advantageous to be right up on speed. (4) Masuta is another I backed on debut, and he too ran a good race to run 2nd. No doubt he will be a big player in this, while (6) Regal Reece has had early specking at big odds first up from a spell and could be worth throwing in your numbers.
TIP: (5) Over And Above
RACE 2
I was originally keen on Danbana but that horse has been scratched, so I’m left with just a small each way play on Darren Weir’s (10) Mujaadil. This horse follows the typical method that I like to look for in Weir runners, whereby it runs in a country race on debut and comes straight to the city at its next start regardless of the result. It only finished 3rd at Ararat, but we often see them come to the city and improve lengths, so with Damian Lane on from barrier 5, he should get every chance, and $8 appeals. (14) Semari could be hardest to beat after running a good 2nd on debut.
TIP: (10) Mujaadil
RACE 4
Two I’m interested in backing here. (2) Kaptive Hero backed up a number of good runs to break through in nice style at Pakenham last start. While I’m always wary of Pakenham form, his form prior to that suggests it wasn’t an anomaly. He ran minor placings in two good form races behind the likes of WeTakeManhattan and Paris Rock. Both of those have since won again. The little concerns for me are his record at 1600m and the 3kg apprentice going on from an awkward gate, so I won’t be betting big. Also backing (11) Near Queue, who won dominantly three starts ago at Werribee before luckless runs at this track two starts ago and Caulfield last start. Craig Williams keeps the ride after last start, where they went to the line hard held with plenty to offer, so with a bit of luck today I think this horse can go very close at $7.50.
TIP: (2) Kaptive Hero / (11) Near Queue EW
RACE 5
(7) Freehearted looks a pretty safe bet here, but the price is gone. We’re only getting $1.80 but the horse brings superior form to this race and really should be beating this lot. Started the preparation with two wins (Our Chiquilla has since somewhat franked that form) and then went to Adelaide when only narrowly defeated. Comes back to Melbourne and back to the track and distance she won at two starts ago. Rates highly.
TIP: (7) Freehearted
RACE 8
I think (5) Duecourse can go on with it here after two good wins to kick off the preparation. She broke her maiden at Warrnambool first up and backed that up with a 3.75L victory at Terang last start. This is obviously a decent step up in grade but Craig Williams takes the ride from a good barrier and I’d expect her to be hard to beat once again. (8) Elle O’Love is an interesting runner at big odds and could be worth having something small on. The horse was only fair first up but that’s typical of this mare – she put in a similar run first up last start before improving sharply second up. The difference this prep is she goes straight to 1400m second up, rather than sticking to the sprint trips. She is one of only three rides on the day for Ben Melham, who has been taking a limited number of rides but generally makes them count. $12 looks the value in the race. (9) Lipstick Lover a definite winning chance second up for Weir/Lane.
TIP: (5) Duecourse / (8) Elle O’Love EW
ASCOT RACING TIPS
RACE 2
(13) Mirisistible looks a good winning chance on debut here after an impressive trial win at Belmont a couple of weeks ago. The filly had three trials prior to the New Year which were only fair, but she had a small break and returned to the trials a different horse. The win was dynamic and she showed a great turn of acceleration, slicing through the field along the rail to get over the top late. Peter Knuckey sticks with her for race day. Needs a good ride from barrier 9, which can be a tricky starting point over 1100m at Ascot, but if she can get cover I think she’ll be hitting the line hard. $3.60 available.
TIP: (13) Mirisistible
