AFL Round 22 Preview & Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs GWS
Sunday 4:40pm AEST, August 13th, Adelaide Oval
Port Adelaide are reeling after four consecutive losses, despite a brave performance in Geelong last weekend. The Power have some crucial inclusions with Aliir Aliir, Kane Farrell, Jeremy Finlayson, Lachie Jones, Quinton Narkle and Miles Bergman all named in the extended squad for Sunday’s clash.
GWS will be without Toby Bedford and Brent Daniels who were both suspended, leaving a major hole in the Giants small forward stocks. The Giants seven game winning streak was ended last week by their crosstown rivals Sydney, with the eleven point defeat leaving the Giants only two points clear of the tenth placed Swans.
Although Port Adelaide have had some injury issues, their defensive drop off in the last month has been a major concern. The Power have conceded an average of 104 points per game in their four game losing streak, including three scores of 97 or more. Across the first 17 rounds of the season, Ken Hinkley’s side had only conceded above 97 points twice.
With Aliir Aliir and Miles Bergman back to bolster the Port Adelaide defence, the Power have plenty of upside as they look to get their season back on track. The Giants have been generating a lot of goals out of their small forwards with Toby Greene being the Giants leading goal kicker in each of their last four games.
With GWS lacking star power in the key forward posts, it will give Aliir Aliir the opportunity to play off his opponent and intercept in front of Toby Greene, making it difficult for the Giants to kick a winning score on the road.
Port Adelaide will be looking towards the clearance battle as a facet of the game they can gain a major advantage in. The Power rank fifth in the competition for clearances, while the Giants rank twelfth. GWS will look to possess the ball as they’ve done all season long, however Port’s low possession high impact brand of football looms as the perfect counter.
Port Adelaide have won their last three games against the Giants, and are 8-3 at the Adelaide Oval this season, with their only losses coming against Adelaide and Collingwood. With potentially five of their best 22 players returning to the side this week, and coming off an encouraging performance last week, things are pointing towards a return to the winners list for the Power.

Zak Butters 25+ Disposals: Despite Port’s poor form, Zak Butters has continued to produce, recording 30 disposals in each of his last three games. Butters has hit the 25 disposal mark in 14 of his 20 games this season, and had 26 disposals in his last outing against the Giants.
Connor Rozee 25+ Disposals: While most of the attention has centred around Zak Butters, Connor Rozee has put together an incredibly consistent season. Rozee’s last five weeks has seen disposal returns of 28, 28, 28, 26, and 27 disposals, despite the Power having a 1-4 record across those five games.
Dan Houston 25+ Disposals: Houston had by far the worst game of his career best season, being held to just 9 disposals against Geelong. In the six games prior to last week, Houston was averaging 29 disposals per game. Expect a bounce back performance from Houston, who has hit the 25 disposal mark in eight of his last thirteen games.
