AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs Gold Coast
Saturday 7:40pm AEST, July 8th, Adelaide Oval
Saturday’s theme in Round 17 seems to be one-sided affairs, at least according to the bookmakers, and that rings true for the final match which will see Port Adelaide take on Gold Coast at Adelaide Oval. At the time of writing the Power are listed as $1.18 favourites in the H2H market and are giving up 29.5 points in the handicap market.
Port Adelaide are the hottest team in the AFL coming into this weekend, riding a 12-match win streak which is by far their biggest such streak in club history. It looked for all odds that their streak was finally coming to an end against the Bombers last weekend, but a 55-metre bomb from Dan Houston after the siren saw them salute in spectacular fashion.
The Power’s elite form has them sitting second on the ladder and two matches clear of third spot and four matches clear of ninth. It’s fair to say things would have to go horribly wrong for the Power from this point onwards if they’re to finish outside the top four.
Gold Coast were in fantastic form with six wins from their last nine matches when they headed into their Round 13 bye, but it seems as though that one week break has put their momentum to a devastating halt. In their three matches since, they’ve been thumped by 59 points by the Blues and most recently 78 points by the Magpies.
As a result of recent outcomes, the Suns have come under immense scrutiny in the media. Long-standing coach Stewy Dew finds himself under tremendous pressure and the result from this weekend’s fixture could be the deciding factor in his future at the helm of the club.
Importantly, the Suns will get captain Touk Miller back in the team this weekend after a lengthy stint on the sidelines. However, they will need a lot more than his impact if they’re to get anywhere near this Power side.
In my opinion, the Power, on their home deck, should be even bigger favourites than they are and as such, I’m inclined to back them in to cover the five-goal spread.
