AFL Round 24 Preview & Betting Tips
North Melbourne vs Gold Coast
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, August 26th, Blundstone Arena
After starting the season full of optimism with two wins in as many rounds, North Melbourne find themselves still stuck on two wins as we head into the final round of the home and away season.
It’s been another dark season for their fans who have had their loyalty tested over the past five seasons. Still, there have been a couple of positives to take out of their 2023 campaign, with Harry Sheezel being a great chance of winning the Rising Star, and Nick Larkey likely to finish in the top three in the Coleman Medal.
Similarly, Gold Coast will feel as though they’ve completed another season in which they’ve failed to show any meaningful improvement. They’ve flirted with the top eight at times but simply haven’t displayed enough consistency to register the required number of wins to play finals football – something they’re still yet to achieve in their history.
Perhaps the most exciting moment for Suns fans has come off the field this season, with 3x Premiership Coach Damian Hardwick recently signing a six-year deal. He will provide some optimism for the club heading into the offseason, and it’ll be interesting to see the list management decisions he and his supporting cast make to improve the club in the coming months.
Match prediction: With nothing to gain and everything to lose, it would be bizarre if North Melbourne put in anything other than a crappy effort on Saturday. They have the #1 pick in their grasps, all they need to do is lose for the 21st time in a row.
The Suns, who have never won in Tasmania, should just have to turn up and play OK footy and they should be winning this match without any fuss. Take them to cover the spread, but just for a smaller staking consider this is a dead-rubber and anything can happen.

Gold Coast to Win – North haven’t won a match in 20 odd weeks and it makes no sense for them to final secure one now with the #1 pick on the line.
Nick Larkey 2+ Goals – What a season Larkey has had. Top 3 in the Coleman despite playing for the worst club. Back him in for multiple goals again here.
Harry Sheezel 25+ Disposals – A big performance from Sheezel to finish the season could just see him jag the Rising Star. He’ll be motivated to perform on Saturday.
Sam Flanders 25+ Disposals – Some terrific form in the back half of the season has seen Flanders rewarded with a four-year contract offer. He’ll be keen to finish the year with a bang.
