AFL Round 5: Sunday Preview & Betting Tips

July 4th 2020, 6:39pm, By: PuntingInDanger

Three great games will close out Round 5 in the AFL season this Sunday, with the triple header set to kick off from 1.05pm!

As usual, we have you covered with a full preview and betting tips for all three games below.

AFL Round 5 Sunday Betting Tips

Adelaide vs Fremantle

Metricon Stadium, 1.05pm (AEST)

The last two teams yet to record a win in the 2020 AFL season are Adelaide and Fremantle and they’ll do battle in the opening game of the Sunday triple header from 1.05pm at Metricon Stadium. There’s no doubt that the Dockers have been much more competitive than their counterparts throughout the first four rounds, going down to the Bombers, Lions and Suns by a combined margin of just 31 points.

On the contrary, the Crows have been absolutely smashed by basically the same opponents, losing to the Power in Round 2 by 75 points followed by a 53 point loss to the Suns and a 37 point loss to the Lions. They sit on the bottom of the ladder with a percentage of just 51.9 and have wielded the axe on some of their big names over the past few weeks.

Hard to like anything about the Crows at the moment. Despite having over 15 of their Grand Final players of 2017 available, they can’t seem to make anything happen on the weekend. The Crows have won their last three as the home side against the Dockers but there will be no real home field advantage with the hosting the game at Metricon. Freo start as 9.5 point favourites here and we are happy to back them at that line.

Melbourne vs Richmond

MCG, 4.35pm (AEST)

The reigning premiers need something to spark their season, desperately. They currently sit outside the top eight with just a 1-1-2 record and have been deplorable since the return of the season a few weeks ago. They fought out an ugly low scoring draw with Collingwood in Round 2 before losing back to back games against the Hawks and Saints where they were barely competitive.

Melbourne also sit near the bottom of the ladder, but still have a game in hand after their Round 3 clash against Essendon was postponed. They beat the Blues by 1 point in Round 2 before suffering a tough, albeit competitive loss to the Cats at the MCG by 3 points in Round 4.

The Tigers have inspired no confidence over the last three weeks and amidst all of the negative media that has surrounded the club through the week, we can’t see how they come out particularly fired up here. The Demons start as 12.5 point underdogs and we love them at that line. This should be a low scoring clash.

Melbourne +12.5

Greater Western Sydney vs Hawthorn

GIANTS Stadium, 6.10pm (AEST)

The Giants recorded a huge win in the context of their season last weekend when they downed the Magpies on Friday night football by two points. Josh Kelly was fantastic in the win, racking up 21 touches and one goal while Toby Greene booted three goals himself. Callan Ward comes out of the Giants side this week with injury, joining the likes of Tim Taranto and Zac Williams on the sidelines.

The Hawks are very quietly going about their business at the moment with a 3-1 record through four games including some impressive wins over the Lions, Tigers and Kangaroos. Their road will get much easier as the season wears on, so we expect them to be playing finals this season.

Luke Bruest comes out of the Hawks side through injury but they do get Paul Puopolo back. The Giants start as slight 6.5 point favourites here but we have opted to go against them. Can’t really fault anything the Hawks have done this season, their only loss came down at the Cattery, where it is extremely hard to perform. Like the value of the Hawks here.

Hawks +6.5
