A-League Round 18 Betting Tips
Melbourne City vs Melbourne Victory
Friday, 7:30pm AEDT
Melbourne City were pretty disappointing in their loss to Adelaide United last weekend, although it was always going to be a tough outing against the in-form Reds. Prior to that City were four games unbeaten in the league, which has helped them stay in second spot on the ladder as we approach the final 10 or so games in the regular season.
Melbourne Victory showed some promising signs in their 2-2 away draw in Perth last weekend. Twice Victory were able to hit the front in that match, but twice they conceded late in a half and had to settle for one point. Victory are now without a win in four straight league matches and have an uphill battle ahead of them to make the finals.
The Melbourne Derby is usually a fixture in which form and ladder positioning goes out the window, however, City’s form is so much better than Victory’s that it’s hard to completely disregard it in this circumstance. We expect them to be good enough to negotiate a win here and even the ledger against their rivals this campaign.
Perth Glory vs Wellington Phoenix
Friday, 9:45pm AEDT
Perth Glory could only manage a point from their home fixture against the out of sorts Melbourne Victory last weekend, which is a bit worrying. They’ve now drawn two league matches in a row and look as though they’ve lost their red hot form they had going for a couple of weeks. Regardless, it’s been a great revival from Glory over the past two months and they come into this weekend in third spot on the ladder as a result.
Wellington Phoenix were the recipients of the bye last weekend, which probably came at a bad time for them considering they were on such a terrific run. Their most recent match resulted in a 2-1 win over the Jets, which was their fourth win from their past five games. Phoenix have shown great improvement over the course of the season and come into this in fourth spot on the table.
This is one of the juicier fixtures on this weekend and we expect it to be fantastic viewing. Glory’s form has dropped off a touch in recent weeks, which could leave the door open for the revitalised Phoenix to swoop in for the win. We expect the underdogs to have their fair chances to win this, so we’re happy to get the even odds on the double result.

Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers
Saturday, 5pm AEDT
Sydney FC got the job done once again last weekend when they got the better of Brisbane Roar by one goal to nil. That was Sydney’s fifth straight league win and their 11th from their past 12 games. They’re really in some remarkable form and have shown absolutely no drop off from their title last season. They come into this weekend clear at the top of the table by 13 points.
Western Sydney were able to snap a three game losing run last weekend when they defeated the Mariners 3-1 on the road. To say it was a much-needed three points is in understatement, considering they’d claimed maximum points in just one of their 11 fixtures prior. Despite some terrible form, the Wanderers are still just four points outside the top six with plenty of matches to come.
These rivals have only faced each other once so far this season and it was the Wanderers who got the shock result. However, things have changed drastically since then and a repeat result seems almost unachievable. Sydney FC are in formidable form coming into this weekend and we’re happy to continue to back them in to win.
